Volleyball To Open 2021 Season At Top Dawg Challenge

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – The Bowling Green volleyball team (0-0) will begin the 2021 campaign at the Top Dawg Challenge, hosted by Butler. The Falcons will compete against Illinois Chicago (UIC), Butler and Indiana, with each match being held in Hinkle Fieldhouse.
BGSU opens the season at 10 a.m. on Friday, Aug. 27. They will face the UIC Flames of the Horizon League. This will serve as the season opener for both squads. The Orange and Brown's second match of the weekend will be held at 6 p.m. the same evening against Butler. This will be the first match of the season for the Bulldogs, who compete in the Big East. The Falcons will conclude the weekend with a 1 p.m. match against Indiana on Saturday, Aug. 28. This will be the Hoosiers' second match of the weekend, with a Friday afternoon match against UIC serving as their season opener.

Tickets, Parking, and Attendance Guidelines
Admission is free for the matches against UIC and Indiana. Tickets for the BGSU vs. Butler match are available for online purchase HERE. Tickets can also be purchased at the Hinkle Fieldhouse ticket office, beginning 60 minutes before the match. All tickets are general admission and parking is free. Masks are required for all fans in Hinkle Fieldhouse.
Falcon Tidbits
• The Falcons return 13 of their 15 letter winners from the 2020-21 season, including first-team All-MAC selections Petra Indrova, Hanna Laube, and Katelyn Meyer.
• In the MAC Preseason Coaches' Poll, BGSU was a unanimous selection to win the MAC East and received 10 of 12 votes to win the MAC Tournament. Indrova, Laube, and Meyer were also named Preseason All-MAC.
• This will be the first non-conference regular-season competition for the Falcons since September 21, 2019. The 2019 squad featured nine of the 18 players on this year's roster, including Katie Kidwell and Kerstie Shaw. Kidwell and Shaw are utilizing their extra year of eligibility to return to BGSU for a fifth season.

UIC: The Falcons hold a 7-5 series advantage over the Flames. Their last matchup was also a season opener, with UIC winning in five sets. The last time the teams played each other at a neutral site was in 2002, with BGSU sweeping UIC 3-0 at the Badger Invitational.
Butler: The Falcons have a 1-1 all-time record against the Bulldogs, with both matches being played in an invitational hosted by the winning team. In 1996, Butler defeated BGSU at the Butler Doubletree Classic. In 2019, BGSU won in four sets at the Hampton Inn Classic, hosted in the Stroh Center.
Indiana: The Falcons have a 2-4 all-time record against the Hoosiers, with the most recent matchup occurring in 2015. The Hoosiers won in three sets at the Indiana Invitational. In 2012, the Falcons defeated Indiana in four sets at the Indiana Invitational.
Opponent Information
UIC: Illinois Chicago had a historic 2020-21 campaign, finishing with a program-record 13 conference wins. They concluded the season with an overall record of 14-3, with a 13-1 mark in the Horizon League. The Flames were the runner-up in the Horizon League Tournament, and they return first-team All-League outside hitter Paola Santiago.
Butler: Butler finished the 2020-21 season with a 4-10 overall record and a 1-7 mark in the Big East. The Bulldogs return their leaders in several statistical categories, including Brittany Robinson (kills) and Jaymeson Kinley (aces and digs). Kinley's total of 226 digs was also the highest mark in the Big East.
Indiana: Indiana's 2020-21 schedule was entirely Big Ten matches, where they finished 3-15. Notable returners for the Hoosiers include Brooke Westbeld, who led the team in assists, and Haley Armstrong, who led the team in aces and digs.

"We are excited to start our season at Butler tomorrow when we face UIC. We had a great training camp, and our team is as ready as it could be at this point. We will face strong competition over the next couple of days that will allow us to see how things we worked on in practice will transfer in the match situation and also will help us grow as a team."

This is the first of three invitationals the Falcons will participate in to open the season. Next weekend, the Falcons will play in the Notre Dame Tournament, with matchups against Notre Dame, Milwaukee and Cincinnati. The tournament spans three days, with BGSU playing in one match each day.
