Falcons Head To Notre Dame For Shamrock Invitational

NOTRE DAME, Ind. – The Bowling Green Falcons volleyball team (1-2) continues the non-conference portion of their 2021 season at the Shamrock Invitational, held at the University of Notre Dame. The Falcons will compete against Notre Dame (2-1), Milwaukee (0-3), and Cincinnati (1-2), with each match being held in Purcell Pavilion at the Joyce Center.

BGSU opens the weekend at 7 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 3. They will face the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, who is the host of the invitational. This will be the first action of the weekend for both teams. The Falcons' second match of the weekend will be against the Milwaukee Panthers at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 4. Finally, the Orange and Brown will conclude their participation at the Shamrock Invitational with an 11:30 a.m. Sunday match with the Cincinnati Bearcats.

Tickets, Parking, and Attendance Guidelines
Admission and parking are free for all matches this weekend. All three matches will be held in the Purcell Pavilion at the Joyce Center, which has a capacity of 9,149. Masks are required for all fans in attendance, regardless of vaccination status.

Falcon Tidbits
• The Falcons participated in the Top Dawg Challenge at Butler University last weekend. BGSU finished 1-2, losing in four sets to UIC, beating Butler in four sets, and falling to Indiana in five sets. Notably, the Falcons won the third set in each match.
• The victory over Butler marked a historic achievement for head coach Danijela Tomic, who has reached 150 career wins at BGSU. Tomic, who recently signed a four-year extension, is in her tenth season at the helm of the Falcons.
• Petra Indrova and Katie Kidwell were named to the Top Dawg Challenge All-Tournament team. Indrova recorded a double-double in each of the three games, leading the Falcons with 45 kills. Kidwell recorded six block assists to push her career total to 446, breaking the previous program record of 443. Kidwell also had a hitting percentage of .365, the highest among all Falcons who had at least 10 total attacks.
• Hanna Laube recorded 134 assists last weekend, which currently ranks tenth in the country. Last season, she finished third in the country with 932 assists. The Falcons have recorded 159 assists as a team, ranking 18th in the country.

Notre Dame: Friday's match will be the 14th time the Falcons and Fighting Irish face each other, with Notre Dame holding a 10-3 series advantage. The last matchup was in 2019, a four-set victory for Notre Dame at their own Golden Dome Invitational. In 2015, BGSU won in four sets at the Blue Raider Bash, hosted by Middle Tennessee State University.

Milwaukee: In the lone meeting between the Falcons and Panthers, Milwaukee won in three sets at the 2015 Inntower Invitational, hosted by the University of Wisconsin. Like the 2015 match, the teams will play each other at a neutral site.
Cincinnati: BGSU and Cincinnati have played 21 times, with the Falcons winning nine of those matches. The last match occurred in 2019 at the Queen City Classic, hosted by Cincinnati. The Bearcats won in three sets. Sunday will mark the first time the teams play at a neutral location since 2000 when the Falcons won in three sets at the Indiana Invitational. In their 1990 matchup, the Falcons set a program record with 24 team blocks, helping them win a five-set thriller over the Bearcats.

Opponent Information
Notre Dame: This will be the second consecutive weekend Notre Dame hosts an invitational, with last weekend's Golden Dome Invitational serving as their season opener. The Fighting Irish lost the opening match to No. 16 Western Kentucky in three sets before recovering to beat Oakland in five sets and Loyola Chicago in three sets. Preseason All-ACCÂ selection Zoe Nunez was key for the Fighting Irish, recording 109 assists in three matches.

Milwaukee:Â Milwaukee opened the season by hosting the Panther Invitational, losing to Illinois, UCSB, and Valparaiso in three, four, and five sets, respectively. First-team All-Horizon League selection Ari Miller was impressive for the Panthers, registering 51 kills on a .402 hitting percentage.
Cincinnati: The Bearcats participated in the Dayton Tournament last weekend, finishing with a 1-2 record. They opened the season with a five-set loss to the host Flyers. After rebounding to beat Texas State in four sets, Cincinnati lost the weekend finale to No. 3 Kentucky. Two-time All-AAC selection Adria Oliver is off to a strong start this season, registering 19 kills on a .500 hitting percentage.

Each team we will face this weekend brings a different style of play, which is great for us to learn how to adapt and respond. However, our primary focus is on our side of the net and playing up to our standards."
