BGSU soccer standouts earn league's weekly honor
Bowling Green State University soccer standouts Logan Kowalczyk and Audrey Shea have swept the Mid-American Conference's Scholar-Athlete-of-the-Week awards, the league office announced on Wednesday afternoon (Sept. 22). Each student-athlete earns the honor for the first time.
Kowalczyk, a native of Pinckney, Mich. (Gahanna [Ohio] Lincoln), had a pair of shutouts in the Falcons' two matches last week. He made three saves in BGSU's 3-0 win over Wright State, then had two more stops as the Falcons topped nationally-ranked FIU, 2-0. The wins vaulted BGSU into the national rankings, as the Falcons are now ranked 17th in the nation in the United Soccer Coaches poll and 24th by College Soccer News.
Kowalczyk, a junior, posted another shutout Tuesday night (Sept. 21) vs. Detroit Mercy, lowering his goals-against average to just 0.24 on the season. He now has six clean sheets in the Falcons' eight matches. BGSU is now 6-1-1 on the season, with the only loss coming against the defending national champions.
In the classroom, Kowalczyk has a 3239 cumulative grade-point average as a communication major.
Shea, a native of Upper Arlington, Ohio (Bishop Watterson), helped the Falcons battle #17 Xavier to a 1-1 draw in BG's lone match last week. She played all 110 minutes and scored the first goal of her collegiate career, off of a BG corner kick.
And, at the other end of the field, Shea and the BG defense held the Musketeers, who entered the match with a 7-0-0 record, to just that one goal. The draw is believed to be the first time in program history that BGSU has earned a result against a top-25 team. Shea, a junior, has played 664 of the team's 670 minutes this season.
Shea, a biology major, has a perfect 4.000 cumulative GPA.
The Scholar-Athlete of the Week Award is presented to one male and one female student-athlete each week. Nominees must maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or better and must have performed well during the previous week's competition. An institution can nominate up to one male and one female student-athlete per week in any of that current season's sports. The winners are selected by a representative of the MAC's Faculty Athletics Representatives (FARs).
Both BGSU soccer teams are in action over the next few days. The women's team opens MAC play on Thursday (Sept. 23), heading to Western Michigan for a 4:00 p.m. matchup with the Broncos. The BGSU men are in Western New York the following day, facing Canisius in a Friday (Sept. 24) contest that also begins at 4:00 p.m.
