Falcons Tally Fifth Straight Home Win In Overtime Thriller

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The Bowling Green State University men's basketball program picked up their first Mid-American Conference victory of the season with an overtime win over Miami at the Stroh Center Saturday night (Jan. 8), 87-83. The Falcons used a strong second half to send the game to overtime, outscoring the RedHawks 10-6 in the overtime period for the win. Both Daeqwon Plowden (27) and Joe Reece (20) set career-highs in the scoring column as well as 10 rebounds each for a pair of double-doubles for BGSU. The win advances the Falcons to 8-6 overall, 1-2 in the MAC, heading into a game against Ohio next Tuesday (Jan. 11).

HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Falcons created an early lead, taking a 9-5 advantage into the first media timeout. The lead would grow to nine points at 14-5, but Miami soon found their shot.
- The RedHawks utilized an 8-0 run to tie the game up at 19-19. The two teams would trade buckets, seeing a tie as deep as 24-24 in the first half.
- Miami closed out the first half with an 11-0 run, taking a 35-26 lead into the halftime break.
- In the second half, Bowling Green slowly chipped away at the RedHawk lead. Looking for a boost off the bench, the Falcons turned to Myron Gordon. With Gordon in, the Falcons immediately saw a 12-2 run that narrowed the gap to just a one-point game at 57-56 after trailing by as many as 13.
- After a Miami turnover, Joe Reece made a layup to grant the Falcons the lead at 58-57.
- The two teams returned to back-and-forth action, seeing four more lead changes the rest of regulation. Down the stretch, the score showed ties at 63-63, 68-68, 76-76 and finally 77-77, sending the game to overtime.
- In the overtime period, Reece started the scoring with a layup to put the Falcons up. BGSU would hold the lead from that point on thanks to a jump shot from Daeqwon Plowden, four free throws from Gordon and two more from Brenton Mills.
- In total, the Orange and Brown outscored Miami 10-6 in overtime to capture an 87-83 victory.

FALCON STAT FACTS
- The win marks the first conference win of the season for the Falcons and snaps a three-game losing streak against Miami all-time. The win is also BGSU's first of the 2022 calendar and is the fifth consecutive win at the Stroh for the Orange and Brown, now 6-1 at home.
- The overtime victory marks the first in extra time for the Falcons since topping Appalachian State on the road on Nov. 30, 2020 by a score of 78-76.
- With 27 points, Daeqwon Plowden set a new career-high and a new team-high for the season while posting his third double-double of the campaign with 10 rebounds. The point total brings Plowden's career mark to 1,355, passing A'uston Calhoun for 21st on the all-time list. Plowden needs just two points to pass Nate Thurmond and enter the Top 20 all-time.
- Plowden also logged a block on the night, giving him sole possession of seventh on the all-time block list with a career total of 106, breaking a tie with Kevin Netter.
- Joe Reece set a new career-high for points as well with 20 on the night. Reece added 10 rebounds to his stat line for his third double-double of the season.
- With Reece hitting 20 points, the Falcons have now had six different players reach the 20-point mark this year. Only Plowden has done so multiple times (twice).
- Plowden and Reece are the first pair of Falcons to reach 20 points in the same game since Feb. 16, 2021 against Ball State when Justin Turner (27) and Kaden Metheny (21) both hit the mark.
- Plowden and Reece have now logged a double-double in the same game twice this season, both in overtime games. The last time was the first game of the season against Western Carolina.
- With eight rebounds on the night, Chandler Turner set a new single season-high in rebounds for his career with a total of 51 this season, surpassing his mark of 43 from last year. Turner also logged a career-high two steals for a new single season-high there as well, now with seven to top his five from the 2020-21 campaign.
