BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University women's soccer team scored a goal in each half Sunday afternoon (Oct. 30), downing Western Michigan University, 2-0. The match, a quarterfinal-round contest in the Mid-American Conference Tournament, took place at Cochrane Stadium.
With the win, the third-seeded Falcons (9-5-4) advance to Thursday's (Nov. 3) semifinal round. BGSU will take on second-seeded Ball State.
The Broncos, the sixth seed for the MAC Tournament, see the season come to an end with a record of 5-9-5.
Freshman Alaina Uncapher scored her first collegiate goal late in the first half, and junior Maya Dean doubled the BGSU lead midway through the second half.
Lili Berg made five saves in goal as the Falcons earned the shutout.
NOTE OF THE DAY
• BGSU now has a record of 21-7-7 in MAC Tournament action. The Falcons improved to 13-1-4 in home matches at Cochrane Stadium.
• BGSU advanced via penalty kicks in each of the four home conference tourney matches that ended in a tie, meaning that the Falcons have now survived and advanced in 17 of 18 MAC Tournament matches played at home.
HOW IT HAPPENED
• BGSU had a scoring chance less than four minutes into Sunday's match. Brynn Gardner started the play with a cross from the right side. Lacee Bethea tracked it down on the far side, and found Maya Dean. Dean put the ball back into the box, and Katie Cox redirected the ball on goal with a header. But, WMU goalkeeper Hannah Sargent was able to make the save.
• Just under 20 minutes in, Jasmijn Dijsselhof played a free kick into the box, and Makenzie Ortman headed it on frame, but Sargent again was there.
• With five minutes left in the opening half, Alexis Miller stole an attempted clearing pass by a Bronco defender and, from approximately 25 yards from goal, fired a shot that rang off the crossbar. The match remained scoreless, but Miller and the Falcons would get on the board less than a minute later.
• Alaina Uncapher stole the ensuing goal kick, taking the ball down the left side of the field and winning a corner. Miller took that corner kick, playing it into the box. The ball was headed back out toward the fifth-year Falcon, and she gathered it and quickly put another cross into the box. Uncapher headed that diagonal all into the net from approximately eight yards out.
• Less than two minutes into the second half, Uncapher nearly struck again. Bethea's right-side cross went into the box. Kennedy White made a diving effort and got her head on the low cross, and the ball went to Uncapher on the left side of the box. Uncapher fired a quick shot that was blocked by a Bronco defender.
• WMU's Olivia Brunink fired three shots in the first 10 minutes of the second half, including a pair of near-misses just under three minutes apart. The first was a shot from distance that went just over the bar, and the second was a low shot from the left side of the box that rolled just wide of the far post.
• In the 59th minute, another cross from Bethea was just out of reach of the lunging Uncapher at the far post.
• Just over a minute later, the Broncos nearly gave the ball away deep in their own end. White attempted to fire a quick shot after the miscommunication, but a Western defender was able to block the ball away.
• Uncapher and fellow freshman Brynn Gardner had chances just 15 seconds apart, but each shot was just barely off the mark.
• Midway through the half, the Falcons made it a two-goal game. A cross was headed into the air by a Bronco defender, and another Western player headed it out of the box. The ball sailed toward Dean, who chested it down and quickly fired a shot on the short-hop. The perfectly-place shot sailed just over the outstretched arm of Sargent and just under the crossbar, giving BGSU a 2-0 lead with 21:51 to go.
• From there, the BG defense held firm. WMU had only one shot on goal in the final 21-plus minutes, and Lili Berg grabbed that shot out of the air in the late stages of the match.
