Marcus Myers Joins Falcon Track and Field Staff
November 01, 2022 | Women's Track and Field
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – Bowling Green State University head cross country/track and field coach Lou Snelling has announced the addition of assistant coach Marcus Myers to his staff. Myers will serve as the throws coach for the Falcons, a position he previously held at Northwood University for four seasons. Myers brings a wealth of experience in coaching, as well as a multitude of national honors as a thrower.
Â
"Over the years we have had a consistent history of high level success in the Mid-American Conference and at NCAA Championships, particularly with our throws group. The list of conference champions and All Americans is long," said Coach Snelling. "Concurrently we have had a high level of coaching in that event area. I am confident Marcus Myers will be the next great throws coach at Bowling Green. He already has a pedigree of success going back to being an NCAA Champion himself. I look forward to seeing our program continuing to develop over the next many years under his tutelage."
Â
While at Northwood, Myers guided his throwers to three NCAA D-II first-team All-American honors, as well as two NCAA D-II second-team All-American honors. During his tenure, nine student-athletes qualified for the NCAA D-II National Meet, with the men's and women's throws teams producing 30 NCAA qualifying marks. Additionally, Myers mentored the group to four program records, three conference championships, and five conference runners-up.
Â
Northwood is a member of the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) and saw consistent success with Myers on staff. The men's team placed third at the GLIAC Indoor Championships in three consecutive seasons before improving to a GLIAC runner-up finish in 2022. The Timberwolves added a pair of third-place finishes at the GLIAC Outdoor Championships during his time. In 2022, Myers and his fellow coaches were named the GLIAC Indoor Coaching Staff of the Year.
Â
Myers has spent four summers as a throw coach at collegiate camps. From 2018-19, he developed middle to high school athletes in the discus and shot put at Walsh University, his alma mater. In 2019, 2021, and 2022, he mentored athletes of the same age group in the discus, shot put, and hammer throw, this time at Grand Valley State University. He also has experience as a private high school coach and event coach for the Patrick Henry High School throws camp.
Â
He is a 2018 graduate of Walsh University, earning his bachelor's degree in Marketing. He qualified for the NCAA D-II Track and Field Championships five teams and earned first-team All-American in the hammer, weight, and discus throws on four occasions. During his senior season, he was the national champion in the hammer throw and earned USTFCCCA Midwest Regional Athlete of the Year. He was also named GMAC Athlete of the Year after winning the conference championship in the discus and hammer throw. Myers is the program record-holder in the discus, weight throw, and hammer throw.
Â
In 2019, Myers competed in the hammer throw at the USATF National Championships, throwing an automatic qualifying mark of 228-5.0. He qualified for the U.S. Olympic Trials in the hammer throw in 2020, throwing 236-3.0. He also participated in the USATF National Championships in June 2022.
Â
Myers joins a BGSU program that has sent at least one thrower to each of the last five NCAA Outdoor Championships. This includes Zaresha Neal, who returns to Bowling Green for the 2022-23 season. Neal won multiple MAC titles and qualified for the NCAA Indoor and Outdoor Championships, earning second-team All-American in the shot put at the indoor championships.
