Senior earns honor after six-point outburst in final collegiate match
CLEVELAND, Ohio (BGSU Strategic Communications) – Bowling Green State University men's soccer standout Sergi Martinez has been named Mid-American Conference Player of the Week. The conference office made the announcement on Tuesday morning (Nov. 8).
Martinez, a senior, earns the honor for the first time in his BGSU career.
Martinez also earned honorable mention on the Top Drawer Soccer Team of the Week.
A native of Barcelona, Spain (Eugeni Xammar), Martinez had two goals and two assists as the Falcons posted an emphatic 6-0 win over Northern Illinois on Sunday night (Nov. 6) at Cochrane Stadium. He assisted on the game-winning goal, scored by Kale Nichols in the first half, then had back-to-back BG goals in the second half.
Martinez took a pass from Alberto Anaya on a short free kick, hitting a gorgeous shot across his body that went over the NIU 'keeper and under the crossbar. Then, just over six minutes later, he was taken down in the penalty area and converted the ensuing penalty kick.
He was involved in the scoring of all three second-half goals, as his flick-on of a Jensen Lukacsko cross sent the ball to Trace Terry, who scored the Falcons' final marker.
Martinez finished the season with team-high totals of eight assists and 18 points, and he was second on the Falcons in goals, with five.
In two seasons with the Falcons, he had 30 points in 36 matches, with eight goals and 14 assists. Martinez, a transfer from Hartford, had totals of 14 goals, 21 assists and 49 points in his collegiate career.
The Falcons went 6-5-5 on the season, and BGSU finished with a 4-2-2 MAC ledger, good for a third-place conference finish.
