April 13, 2022 | Football
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – Bowling Green football players LS James Carolan, OT Jordan Murphy, P Matt Naranjo and PK Nate Needham earned NFF Hampshire Honor Society membership, as announced by the National Football Foundation & College Football Hall of Fame. To earn membership a football student-athlete must maintain a cumulative 3.2 GPA or better throughout his college career. BGSU is one of seven MAC teams to place at least one student-athlete to earn the honor.
Other qualifications for membership in the NFF Hampshire Honor Society include: Being a starter or a significant contributor in the last year of eligibility at an NCAA FBS, FCS, Division II, Division III or an NAIA college or university; achieving a 3.2 cumulative grade point average throughout the entire course of undergraduate study; and meeting all NCAA/NAIA-mandated progress toward degree requirements.
Carolan (Anthem, Ariz.) appeared in 42 career games as BGSU's long snapper. He earned All-MAC academic honors in 2018, 2019, 2020 and 2021. He snapped on all punts and field goals in 2021 and was part of a field goal unit that supported Needham, who earned first-team All-America honors from the Football Writers Association of America.
Murphy (Columbiana, Ohio) came to BGSU as a defensive lineman, but made the switch to offensive tackle in 2021. He started 10 of BGSU's 12 games in 2021, seeing all his time at right tackle.
Naranjo (Skokie, Ill.) earned third-team All-MAC honors in 2021 and was on the Ray Guy Award watch list. He averaged 41.6 yards per punt in 2021 with 20 punts coming landing inside the 20-yard line. His 77-yard punt at Minnesota set a Huntington Bank Stadium record. He also served as the holder.
Needham (Chesterton, Ind.) earned first-team All-America and All-MAC accolades in 2021. He connected on 19-of-20 field goal attempts and his 95 percent success rate ranked No. 1 in the nation through the regular season. He was 12-of-12 from 40+ yards, including going 2-of-2 from 50+ yards.
BGSU has had a Falcon earn the honor two years in a row. Presley Motes earned the honor in 2021. The four honorees are the most since 2018 when BGSU also had four (Clark Clancy, Josephy Davidson, Ryan Hunter, Nate Locke).
Fellow MAC members Buffalo, Central Michigan, Eastern Michigan, NIU, Toledo and Western Michigan also boast student-athletes that gained membership in 2022.
