BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The Bowling Green State University men's basketball program goes back on the road this week, traveling to face the Kent State Golden Flashes on Tuesday (Feb. 7). The Falcons and Golden Flashes are scheduled for a 7 p.m. tip inside the M.A.C. Center with the game being available to watch on ESPN+. Fans can tune in to the action via WFRO Eagle 99. A live stat link will be provided at bgsufalcons.com with live updates available on Twitter (@BGSUMHoops).Â
Tuesday will mark the 170th meeting all-time between the Falcons and Golden Flashes, the second-longest rivalry in program history behind only Toledo. Bowling Green currently leads the all-time series with a record of 89-80 against Kent State, despite the Golden Flashes taking the last six meetings. When playing in Kent, the series leans to KSU 47-35. In last season's game played in Kent, Samari Curtis stuffed the stat sheet with 12 points, four rebounds, three steals and two assists.Â
A Bowling Green Win Would…Â
Scouting The Golden FlashesÂ
Kent State started MAC play with six straight wins, including a winning streak of 10 straight going back to non-conference. However, the Golden Flashes have dropped two of their last four, losing to Northern Illinois (86-76) and Akron (67-55). The key for Kent State has been defense. During MAC play, KSU has the top ranked scoring defense and is second in opponent field goal percentage. The Flashes also are atop the MAC rankings for blocks and steals. On the season, Sincere Carry leads KSU, averaging 17.0 points per game followed by Malique Jacobs with 12.2.Â
Falcons Nearing Century Assist MarkÂ
Samari Curtis will enter Tuesday's game with a team-high 95 assists, needing just five more to reach 100 assists on the season. Curtis just missed the century mark a season ago, finishing with a team-high 93. Leon Ayers III also sits at 75 assists, needing 25 more to reach 100 assists this year. The last time the Falcons had two players with 100+ assists in the same season was 2015-16 when Ismail Ali tallied 130 and David Joseph recorded 100.Â
Ayers Stretches Strong Scoring StreakÂ
Over the last eight games, Leon Ayers III has recorded 19 or more points seven times, including five 20-point games and a career-high 31 against Miami (OH). During the eight-game stretch, Ayers is averaging 21.6 points per game. The strong stretch has pushed Ayers into the MAC leaders, being one of three players averaging over 20 points in conference play with a mark of 21.0, joining Akron's Xavier Castaneda (23.5) and Eastern Michigan's Emoni Bates (21.2). On the season, Ayers has registered 12 of BGSU's 16 20-point games.Â
Metheny Nearing Record Book StatusÂ
This season, Kaden Metheny has recorded a team-high 52 three-pointers, setting a new career-high for his time as a Falcon. Metheny will need to bring his total to 66 to place his name in the record book for three-point field goals in a single-season. Trey Diggs' 66 from last season is currently 10th in program history for the stat. Metheny is currently averaging 2.6 triples a game with eight games remaining in the regular season, projecting him to finish with 72 threes, which would tie him for seventh all-time with Jay Larranaga (1995-96) and Shane Komives (1993-94).Â
