Falcons Land Six on Academic All-MAC Team
March 30, 2023 | Women's Basketball
A total of six Bowling Green State University women's basketball student-athletes have been named to the Academic All-Mid-American Conference Team, the league office announced Thursday morning (March 30). The Falcons' list of honorees includes Sophie Dziekan, Lexi Fleming, Nyla Hampton, Kadie Hempfling, Olivia Hill and Amy Velasco.
Hempfling was named to the Academic All-MAC Team for the fourth consecutive season, while Dziekan, Hampton and Hill each earned the honor for the second-straight year.
The Academic All-MAC Team honor is bestowed upon a student-athlete who has excelled in athletics and academics. To qualify, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative GPA and have participated in at least 50 percent of the contests for that particular sport. True freshmen and transfers in their first academic year at their current school are not eligible for the Academic All-MAC Team.
On the court, the Falcons recently (and by 'recently' we of course mean 'last night') concluded a wildly successful season. BGSU tied the school and Mid-American Conference records by winning 31 games, and the Falcons went 14-4 in MAC regular-season action. BG advanced to the championship game of the MAC Tournament, then advanced to the WNIT, where the Orange and Brown won four games to advance to the semifinal round of the 64-team national tournament.
Obviously, if you are still playing college basketball in late March, your season has been successful. Heading into yesterday's game vs. Columbia, BG was one of just eight NCAA Division-I women's basketball teams still playing.
