BGSU women’s soccer will play eight matches -- including one against national power Notre Dame -- at Cochrane Stadium this fall
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – Bowling Green State University women's soccer coach Jimmy Walker has announced his team's schedule for the 2023 season. The Falcons will play a 17-match regular-season slate that includes eight contests inside the friendly confines of Cochrane Stadium.
The Falcons' arduous non-conference slate includes three matches vs. opponents that won 14 or more matches last fall. Michigan State, Notre Dame and Pittsburgh are among the six non-league foes, with the Fighting Irish coming to Cochrane to close the pre-Mid-American Conference schedule.
Those three programs each finished 16th or higher in both the United Soccer Coaches national poll and the final RPI rankings at the end of the 2022 season. Notre Dame finished No. 5 in the poll and No. 6 in the RPI, with Pitt (No. 12/9) and MSU (No. 15/16) close behind on both lists.
"Over the last few seasons, we have put together one of the toughest schedules in the country," said Walker. "This year may be our most challenging yet, as we will compete against some of the best teams in college soccer.
"The goal, as always, is to test ourselves against the best to prepare for the rigorous MAC schedule."
The Falcons' foes include two from the Atlantic Coast Conference and one each from the Atlantic 10 Conference, Big Ten Conference, Big 12 Conference and Horizon League. Three of those six teams advanced to at least the second round of the NCAA Championships in 2022, with two advancing to the round of 16 and one making it to the national quarterfinals.
The six non-conference opponents had a combined record of 69-32-20 (.653) in the 2022 season.
The Orange and Brown will open the regular season with a trip to defending Big Ten champion Michigan State on Sunday, August 20. The Spartans were 17-3-3 a year ago, with the 17th win coming in the national tournament. BGSU then travels to Cincinnati (Aug. 24) before opening the home portion of the schedule on Sunday, Aug. 27, vs. Loyola Chicago.
After a game at Detroit Mercy (Aug. 31), the Falcons will end the non-league slate with back-to-back battles vs. ACC opposition. BGSU travels to Pitt on Sept. 3, before hosting Notre Dame on Sept. 10. The Panthers went 14-5-3 and advanced to the NCAA's round of 16 a year ago, while the Irish ended the 2022 season with a 17-3-3 mark and a trip to the national quarterfinals.
Mid-American Conference play begins with a 'Battle of I-75' contest vs. Toledo, as the Falcons head to the Glass City on Thursday, Sept. 21. The Falcons will host Western Michigan (Sept. 24), Akron (Sept. 28), Eastern Michigan (Oct. 8), Kent State (Oct. 12), Central Michigan (Oct. 19) and Northern Illinois (Oct. 26) in league action, while traveling to face Ohio (Oct. 1), Miami (Oct. 5), Buffalo (Oct. 15) and Ball State (Oct. 22), in addition to UT.
The MAC Tournament begins with quarterfinal-round matches on Oct. 29, with the semifinals scheduled for Nov. 2 and the final slated for Nov. 5.
