FASCINATING FALCON FACTS
• The Falcons are 2-1-2 on the young season, and BGSU takes a three-game unbeaten streak into the NKU match.
• On Friday night (Sept. 8), the Falcons battled DePaul to a scoreless draw at Cochrane Stadium. Brendan Graves made three saves to earn his first shutout of the season, while an apparent BGSU goal in the final minutes of the match was nullified due to an offside call.
• Bowling Green returned 11 letterwinners, including seven starters, from the 2022 team that went 6-5-5 overall and finished third in the Mid-American Conference with a 4-2-2 league ledger. Head coach Eric Nichols and his staff have a whopping 14 newcomers on the 2023 roster.
RHYMES WITH SAVES
• Brendan Graves made three saves on Friday against DePaul, earning his first clean sheet of the year and the 10th of his BGSU career. The Perrysburg native has goals-against average figures of 1.60 this season and 1.07 in his Falcon career.
INDIVIDUALLY...
• Entering the NKU match, three Falcons – Kyle Cusimano, Andrew Shaffer and Eli Shope – have scored two goals apiece this season. Those three players have four points apiece, while Trace Terry has three points on a team-leading three assists to date.
• Rodrigo Montez Silva has the Falcons' other goal, and Alberto Anaya also has two points on the year, with assists on each of Cusimano's goals.
• Anaya is the Falcons' top returning scorer from a year ago. He had 10 points on three goals and four assists in 2022, despite missing four of BG's 16 matches due to injury. Shaffer had eight points and Josh Erlandson seven a year ago, with each player scoring three goals.
• Brendan Graves has played all five matches in goal this season, and has 22 saves and a goals-against average of 1.60.
• Graves has played every second of the Falcons' last 27 matches – a total of 2,450 minutes. No other BGSU player has been between the posts since Oct. 22, 2021.
THE OPPONENT
• Northern Kentucky is 0-1-3 on the season. The Norse played to draws in the first three matches of the year, including home contests vs. UAB and Florida Gulf Coast and a road match vs. Bellarmine. NKU was three seconds away from another draw on Saturday night (Sept. 9), before Robert Morris was awarded and converted a penalty kick for a 2-1 win. Sam Robinson, Joseph Roddy and Nicol Stoddart each have one goal this season, while Roberto Burlew has assisted on two of those three goals. Nic Lemen has played all but 45 minutes in goal this year to date, and has 16 saves, one shutout and a GAA of just 0.86. Head coach Tom Poitras and the Norse went 4-11-2 overall and 2-6-1 in Horizon League play in 2022.
THE SERIES
• The Falcons lead Northern Kentucky, 2-1-1, in the all-time series, but the teams' last meeting went the way of the Norse. Five years ago (Aug. 25, 2018), NKU scored the first three goals of the match and held on for a 3-2 win at Cochrane Stadium. BGSU is 1-1-0 at home and 1-0-1 on the road against NKU in a series that began in 2013.
UP NEXT
• Following the NKU match, the Falcons will meet a familiar foe in a new conference. BGSU will head to Kalamazoo, Mich., for a Saturday (Sept. 16) contest vs. Western Michigan. That match, the first-ever Missouri Valley Conference game for both programs, will begin at 4:00 p.m. at the WMU Soccer Complex.
• Then, BGSU renews the battle for the I-75 Cup with a trip to Wright State on Tuesday, Sept. 19. First touch is set for 7:00 p.m. in Dayton.
