Trace has a Brace as BGSU Beats Bradley, 3-1
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – Sophomore Trace Terry scored a pair of goals, including the game winner with under eight minutes to go, as the Bowling Green State University men's soccer team downed Bradley University, 3-1, on Saturday night (Sept. 23). The Missouri Valley Conference match was held at Cochrane Stadium.
Freshman Jake Lane scored his first collegiate goal to cap the scoring in the Falcons' (4-3-2, 1-1-0 MVC) first MVC victory in program history.
The Braves (4-1-4, 0-1-0 MVC) lost for the first time this season. Bradley had allowed just four goals through eight matches, before surrendering three to the Falcons on Saturday evening.
Brendan Graves made seven saves to earn the win in goal. Bradley's lone goal came on a penalty kick.
NOTE OF THE NIGHT
• The Falcons have played a total of 810 minutes this season to date. Jake Lane's goal in the 84th minute of Saturday night's match, and the 804th minute of the season, gave BGSU a two-goal lead for the first time in 2023.
• In fact, the Falcons have either been in a tie game or a one-goal game for all but 18:41 of those 810 minutes. No team has had more than a one-goal lead in the first 81 minutes of any of BG's nine matches to date.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• The Falcons' seemed to possess the ball in the offensive end of the field for much of the game's first 25 minutes before finally breaking through with Trace Terry's first goal. BGSU did not put any shots on frame until midway through the period, as efforts by Kyle Blasingame and Terry were blocked in the first four minutes, and a nifty bicycle kick by Nathan Masters flew over the bar in the 12th minute.
• With nearly 17 minutes gone, a nice passing sequence that involved Jake Bergin, Terry and Andrew Shaffer resulted in a short diagonal ball from Bergin. Eli Shope got his head on the ball in the penalty area, but his shot went wide.
• Terry's curving shot in the 22nd minute went just over the goal, and just one minute later, Anthony Hernandez volleyed a ball out of the air, putting a shot on frame. But, Bradley goalkeeper Drew Berry went to the ground to make the save.
• Terry's first goal of the night came at the 25:18 mark. After a foul on the Braves, Hernandez played a free kick into the box from the right side. Berry came off of his line to punch the ball away in traffic. But, Blasingame tracked the ball down on the left side of the field, and served a ball back into the penalty area. Terry outjumped his would-be defender and nodded the ball into the right side of the goal, celebrating his first goal of the season –the the first goal in an MVC match in program history – with a backflip.
• Two minutes later, off of a BG free kick from the left side, Shope hit a turnaround shot in traffic in the box. But, that effort was blocked by a defender.
• BGSU held an 8-2 advantage in shots at that point, but BU's DJ Koulai put a pair of shots on frame less than two minutes apart. Falcon 'keeper Brendan Graves, however, was up to the task, stopping both shots.
• With just over nine minutes to go before halftime, Bergin put a ball into the box. It momentarily looked like Berry had been caught out of position, but the 'keeper drifted back toward the goalmouth as the ball sailed just over the bar.
• Four minutes remained in the period when Alberto Anaya blocked the clearing attempt by a Bradley defender. The ball went to Terry near the 18, who passed the ball back to Anaya after the junior made an overlapping run. Anaya hit a hard shot from just outside the box that whizzed over the crossbar.
• With under 20 seconds gone in the second half, Shaffer stole the ball just over midfield and hit a shot that was blocked. The ball came back to Shaffer, who found Masters with a pass. Masters, near the 18-yard line on the right side, battled with a Bradley player for the ball, which sailed toward the six-yard box. Hernandez and Berry went up for the ball, and Hernandez gained control and hit a turnaround volley into the right side of the goal. But, a handball violation was called on the play, and the score remained 1-0.
• As the match neared the hour mark, Shaffer took a pass from Masters on the right side of the box, but as Shaffer prepared to shoot, a defender got a piece of the ball, and the shot rolled to Berry.
• With approximately 21 minutes to go, a long ball by Rodrigo Montez Silva found Terry in space. The sophomore slid a pass to Shope on his left, but Shope's shot was blocked and the ball was knocked away from Terry just before he could shoot.
• Seventeen minutes remained when BU's Patrick Fishburne played a cross from the right side. The ball glanced off the top of the crossbar and went out for a BGSU goal kick.
• Two minutes later, the Braves got on the scoreboard after a BG foul in the box. Joao Saraiva converted the resulting penalty kick with 14:57 to go, and the match was tied.
• Just over seven minutes after that, however, the Falcons retook the lead. BGSU stole a Bradley throw-in, with Shaffer gaining possession near midfield. He exchanged passes with Masters, and Shaffer then slid a pass to Anaya. Anaya in turn chipped a ball to Terry near the 18-yard line on the right side. Terry settled the ball and quickly fired a shot past Berry into the near side of the net. Anaya and Shaffer drew assists on the goal, which came with just 7:54 remaining.
• Then, only 1:36 later, Jake Lane put the Falcons up by two. Shaffer played a ball from the left side of the pitch to the right. Lane received the ball near the right side of the penalty area, and took on two defenders as he moved toward the center of the field. Lane cut the ball back and hit a left-footed shot from outside the 18. A defender got a piece of the ball, but couldn't slow it down as the shot found the net just inside the near post.
• Shaffer nearly gave the Falcons a 4-1 lead with 5:40 to go, but Berry made a nice diving save to deny the BG sophomore.
STATS, NOTES & NUMBERS
• The Falcons had advantages of 16-10 in total shots and 4-3 in corner kicks, but Bradley had an 8-6 lead in shots on goal. Brendan Graves made seven saved, while Drew Berry had three stops.

• Kyle Blasingame registered the first point of his career with an assist on Terry's first goal. Jake Lane also picked up his first points as a Falcon with his first collegiate goal.
• Freshman Gus Peacock made his first collegiate start on Saturday night. A total of 18 different Falcons now have started at least one match this season to date.
