Brace Terry: Sophomore Striker has Second-Straight Two-Goal Game as BGSU Tops Evansville
September 30, 2023 | Men's Soccer
Shope and Shaffer also Score in 4-2 Win at Cochrane
On Senior Night at Cochrane Stadium, fifth-year Falcon Eli Shope had a goal and an assist, while soph Andrew Shaffer also found the back of the net for the Falcons (5-3-2, 2-1-0 Missouri Valley Conference).
Kai Phillip and Nacho Diaz-Caneja each scored for the Purple Aces (3-5-2, 1-2-0 MVC).
The visitors had an 18-15 advantage in overall shot attempts, and an 11-6 edge in shots on goal. Brendan Graves had nine saves for the Falcons, saving a UE penalty kick in the first half.
Terry was involved in the scoring of the game's first three goals, sliding a pass to Shope on the doorstep in the game's 12th minute before scoring himself on a shot from distance in the 15th. He headed home an Alberto Anaya corner kick early in the second half.
The Aces scored less than a minute after BGSU's third goal, and after Shaffer restored the Falcons' three-goal lead in the 64th minute, UE again answered less than a minute later. But, the visitors would get no closer than two goals, as Graves made three saves in the final five minutes of the match.
HOW IT HAPPENED
• Saturday, as mentioned, was Senior Night for the Falcons. Four members of the program – Daniel Cerezo, Josh Erlandson, Nathan Masters and Eli Shope – were recognized in ceremonies prior to the match.
• Once the match began, Shope nearly gave the Falcons a goal in the opening minute. He ran behind the defense, took a long pass from Rodrigo Montez Silva and headed into the penalty area. But, Evansville goalkeeper Jacob Madden was able to block Shope's shot at the near post.
• But, Shope and the Falcons got on the board in the 12th minute of the match. Anthony Hernandez played a ball forward to Trace Terry on the right side of the field. As the ball headed toward the end line, a UE defender attempted to shield Terry and let it roll out of play. But, Terry not only saved the ball, but got around his defender as well. He took a touch along the end line and slid a pass to Shope, who was stationed at the near post. Shope blasted his one-time effort into the roof of the net, just under the crossbar.
• And, less than three minutes later, BG was on the board again. Montez Silva found Terry with a pass, and Terry took several touches, then turned and blasted a shot from distance. Madden had no chance as the shot sailed over the 'keeper and under the crossbar. With just 14:09 gone, the Falcons had a 2-0 lead.
• In the 27th minute, an Evansville shot was blocked by a BGSU player, but it was ruled that the shot had hit the hand of said BGSU player, and a penalty kick was awarded. But, Brendan Graves made a diving save on Carlos Barcia's effort, and the Falcons' two-goal lead remained intact.
• The Falcons had opened the scoring with 33:33 remaining in the first half. BGSU's first goal of the second half came with 33:56 on the clock. Alberto Anaya put a corner kick into the box, and Terry rose up above all of the other players to head it into the net for a three-goal Falcon lead.
• But, the Purple Aces would get on the board just 52 seconds later, as Kai Phillip headed home a diagonal ball from Nacho Diaz-Caneja.
• BGSU went back ahead by three goals with just under 27 minutes to go. Shope, from the left side of the field, slid a pass to Shaffer near the circle at the top of the 18-yard box. Shaffer settled the ball and hit a gorgeous looping shot that dipped just under the crossbar and just inside the right goalpost.
• Once again, though, the Aces responded with a goal less than a minute later. Audun Engen Vik pounced on a loose ball after a BGSU defender went to the ground, and UE had an odd-man rush. Engen Vik took the ball into the penalty area and slid a pass to a wide-open Diaz-Caneja, who converted from near the six-yard line.
• But, UE would creep no closer. Graves, as mentioned earlier, made three saves in the final five minutes of the match, and BGSU closed out the 4-2 win.
