Falcons Fall To Rockets Saturday

TOLEDO, Ohio - The Bowling Green State University men's basketball team traveled north on Saturday (Jan. 27) for the Battle of I-75 with the rival Rockets of Toledo. BGSU and UT played to a 31-31 halftime tie, but a strong second half for Toledo pushed them in front for the 88-72 final score inside Savage Arena, moving BGSU to 14-6 on the season and 5-3 within the MAC.
Marcus Hill led the Bowling Green effort with his fifth straight 20-point game finishing with 25 in addition to his team-leading three assists. Da'Shawn Phillip followed with a season-high 13 points while both Trey Thomas and Jason Spurgin posted 12. Rashaun Agee closed out the scoring with 10 points, seeing all five Falcon starters reach double-digit points for the third time this season.

The Falcons will continue their current road trip with the next stop being in Muncie, Ind. against the Ball State Cardinals on Tuesday (Jan. 30) for a 7 p.m. tip. BGSU's next home game is set for Feb. 3 when the Orange and Brown host Central Michigan in a 5 p.m. start.

Marcus Hill led the Bowling Green effort with his fifth straight 20-point game finishing with 25 in addition to his team-leading three assists. Da'Shawn Phillip followed with a season-high 13 points while both Trey Thomas and Jason Spurgin posted 12. Rashaun Agee closed out the scoring with 10 points, seeing all five Falcon starters reach double-digit points for the third time this season.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Toledo opened the game with a jump shot, but the Falcons answered with a 6-0 run to move in front 6-2. Jason Spurgin got it started with a hook shot followed by back-to-back buckets from Marcus Hill.
- After a Rocket three, Rashaun Agee took a BGSU steal and slammed it home followed by a Da'Shawn Phillip three to push the BGSU lead to 11-5.
- The two teams traded points before Phillip hit a jumper and Trey Thomas tallied his second three of the game to make it a 19-9 score. Toledo added a basket before the first media break, coming under 11 minutes played, with the score at 19-11. The score moved to 19-13 and stayed there at the next two media timeouts.
- Spurgin was able to add two to BGSU's score, but the Rockets worked to narrow the gap with a 5-0 run to bring the score to 21-18.
- The Falcons and Rockets traded points up to the next media timeout with the score set at 25-22.
- Out of the timeout, Toledo used a 6-2 run to move in front 28-27. Thomas went up-and-under before Phillip swiped a steal that led to a Hill layup for a 31-28 BGSU lead.
- Toledo was able to tie it up before the half, sending the teams to the locker room with a 31-31 score.
- The Rockets scored the first points of the second half, but Spurgin responded with a three. BGSU and UT traded points with Thomas hitting a jumper before the first timeout of the half with the score at 37-36 Rockets.
- Soon after the timeout, Agee was able to convert an and-one opportunity to move in front 39-37, but the Rockets answered with a 6-0 run to take a 43-39 lead.
- The Falcons added a three from Phillip, but the Toledo advantage expanded to 48-42 with a 5-0 run to force a Bowling Green timeout.
- Hill made two quick layups for BGSU after the timeout to draw the score to 48-46. Toledo added a three before a 5-0 BGSU run tied it at 51-51. Spurgin hit a three before an Agee layup knotted it up.
- Phillip swiped a steal and made a shot on the other end to make it 53-51. He added a three to push the score to 56-51, but Toledo answered with a three of their own before a timeout with the score at 56-54 BGSU.
- Toledo tied it out of the timeout, but Hill added a layup to reclaim the lead at 58-56. Toledo responded with an 11-0 run to make it a 67-58 Toledo advantage at the under-8 media timeout.
- The Rockets stretched their lead to 77-64 at the under-4 media timeout. Toledo was able to hold the lead for an 88-72 final.

- For the third time this season and second time in MAC play all five of BGSU's starters reached double-digit points
- Marcus Hill finished with a team-leading 25 points to mark his fifth straight and 11th total 20-point game. Hill also led the Falcons in assists with three for the Orange and Brown.
- Da'Shawn Phillip recorded a season-high 13 points for the Falcons while leading the team in rebounds with six. Phillip was perfect from the field, going 5-of-5 as well as 3-of-3 from deep, both season-highs.
- Trey Thomas and Jason Spurgin both posted 12 points for Bowling Green followed by Rashaun Agee's 10 as double-digit scorers for the game.
- Sam Towns returned to the lineup for the Falcons for the first time since Dec. 2. Towns logged a rebound, steal and block for BGSU.
- The loss is the first time this season the Falcons have lost on Saturday, now with a 6-1 standing.
