Falcons Advance To 3-0 In MAC Play For Fifth Time In Last Seven Seasons
TOLEDO, OHIO – The Bowling Green State University volleyball team put together an electric comeback inside Savage Arena Tuesday night (Oct. 1). After falling behind in the match 2-0, including a 26-24 score in the second set, the Falcons powered back into the match with a third set win and a 26-24 win in the fourth set to force a fifth. The Falcons and Rockets battled back-and-forth, but BGSU finished off the match with a 6-0 run after trailing 10-9 to secure the set and the match comeback.
Bowling Green is now 3-0 in the MAC for the fifth time in the last seven seasons and 8-6 overall on the year. The Falcons have now won five straight inside Savage Arena, dating back to the 2017 season. All-time, BGSU has now registered 60 wins over the Rockets with a record of 60-18 in the rivalry.

How It Happened
Set 1: Toledo 25, Bowling Green 22
- Toledo began the match with a 3-0 run before the first BGSU point, coming via service error by the Rockets. UT followed with another 3-0 run to stretch their lead to 6-1 to begin the match.
- Toledo was able to extend their lead to a 9-3 advantage forcing a timeout from the Bowling Green bench.
- Coming out of the timeout, Amanda Otten and Mia Tyler landed back-to-back kills followed by a block by Otten and Jessica Andrews and another Tyler kill for a 4-0 BGSU run, trimming the Rocket lead down to 9-7.
- The Rockets utilized a 3-0 run to rebuild their lead to 13-8. A 3-1 stretch for the Falcons chipped away at the deficit, bringing it down to 14-11.
- Toledo pushed the score to 17-11 with a 3-0 burst of their own, resulting in the second BGSU timeout of the set.
- Out of the timeout, the Falcons put together a 4-1 stretch, including a 3-0 run. An ace from Lauryn Hovey capped the run for an 18-15 score favoring the Rockets with Toledo taking a timeout.
- Toledo registered the first point out of the timeout, but a 3-0 run for the Falcons, including an ace from Sydnie Hernandez, trimmed the lead down to 19-18, making it a 6-1 stretch across the timeout.
- The Falcons stayed within one at 20-19, but a 3-0 run for the Rockets pushed the score to 23-19.
- Back-to-back points for the Falcons cut the lead down to 23-21 with Toledo burning their second timeout of the set.
- The Rockets held on through the end of the set for a 25-22 score.
Set 2: Toledo 26, Bowling Green 24
- The Falcons and Rockets traded points to begin the second set, going up to a 4-4 tie in the set before back-to-back points pushed Toledo to a 6-4 lead.
- After the consecutive UT points, the back-and-forth resumed. Bowling Green tallied back-to-back points of their own to tie the set back up at 8-8.
- The ties continued at 9-9, but the Rockets registered a 3-0 run to move in front 12-9. The Falcons paused the action with a timeout.
- The two teams traded points out of the timeout before a 4-1 stretch for Toledo extended their lead to 17-12. The score moved to 18-13 with the second BGSU timeout of the set.
- The back-and-forth carried through the timeout before a 3-1 Bowling Green stretch, capped off by a Hovey ace, forced a Toledo timeout with the score at 20-17 Rockets.
- Toledo tallied the first point after the timeout, but the Falcons responded with a 4-0 run to tie the set at 21-21 with the Rockets using their second timeout.
- The BGSU run extended to 5-0 after the timeout with another Hernandez ace to push BGSU in front 22-21.
- Toledo tied it up at 22-22 before the ties continued at 23-23 and again at 24-24, forcing the set into extra points.
- Toledo registered back-to-back points to take the set 26-24.
Set 3: Bowling Green 25, Toledo 18
- The Falcons started the third set by scoring two points for every one Rocket point, creating an early 4-2 lead, but Toledo tied it up at 4-4.
- After the tie, Bowling Green jumped back in front with a 3-0 run, including an ace from Lindsey LaPinta, pushing the BGSU lead to 7-4.
- Toledo worked to tie the match, using a 4-1 stretch to bring the score to 9-9, but a Hovey kill granted the Falcons the lead again at 10-9.
- The Hovey kill sparked a 4-0 run for the Falcons, pushing the lead to 13-9 with a Toledo timeout.
- The run carried through the timeout for Bowling Green with Hovey adding another kill for a 5-0 stretch and 14-9 advantage.
- Toledo recorded two points, but the Falcons responded with a 3-0 run to take their lead to 17-11, resulting in a Rocket timeout.
- The Falcons kept it going after the timeout, adding two more points to make it a 5-0 run and a 19-11 lead for the Orange and Brown.

Set 4: Bowling Green 26, Toledo 24
- Hovey and Edyta Waclawczyk began the second set with back-to-back kills, giving the Falcons an early 2-0 lead, but Toledo tied it at 2-2. Another pair of BGSU points pushed the Falcons back in front, 4-2.
- The team went back-and-forth before BGSU logged a 3-0 run with strong defensive efforts on multiple points, pushing the score to a 9-5 Falcon advantage.
- After the Toledo tally, the Falcons registered two more points, including an ace from Alexis Mettille, to make it a 5-1 stretch and 11-6 lead, forcing a Toledo timeout.
- Toledo responded with a 4-1 burst out of the timeout, cutting the lead down to 12-10 Falcons with BGSU taking a timeout.
- Coming out of the break, the Falcons recorded a 5-1 run to rebuild their lead to 17-11, seeing Toledo take their second timeout.
- The Rockets worked away at the Bowling Green lead, bringing the score to 20-17 with a couple two-point spurts.
- A 3-1 burst for the Rockets late in the set brought the score to 24-21 BGSU with the Falcons taking a timeout.
- The run moved to 5-0 out of the timeout for Toledo, tying the set up at 24-24 and forcing extra points.
- The Falcons tallied the next two points to claim the set and force a fifth.
Set 5: Bowling Green 15, Toledo 10
- The set began with the teams trading points in the early going with ties reaching 3-3, but a 4-0 BGSU run pushed the Falcons in front 6-3 with Toledo taking a timeout.
- Toledo logged the next two points out of the timeout to cut into the lead, 6-5, but two BGSU points made it an 8-5 score with the teams switching sides of the net.
- A 3-0 run for Toledo tied the set at 8-8 with the Falcons taking a timeout. Toledo's run reached 4-0 out of the timeout for a 9-8 lead.
- Bowling Green tied it at 9-9 with a kill from Tyler with a 10-10 tie following thanks to a Hovey kill. Andrews followed with a kill before another from Hovey for a 3-0 BGSU run and 12-10 lead to force a Toledo timeout.
- Out of the timeout, Waclawczyk landed a kill to keep the run going followed by an attack error for a 14-10 lead and 5-0 run.
- Waclawczyk landed the final point, giving the Falcons a 6-0 run, 15-10 set win and 3-2 match win.

- The win for BGSU marks their first time overcoming a 2-0 deficit on the road since Nov. 11, 2022 when they topped Buffalo. Overall, it's the team's first time overcoming a 2-0 deficit since Aug. 31, 2023 at home against Loyola Chicago.
- The win marks the 60th all-time for the Falcons over Toledo, giving BGSU a 60-18 record in the all-time series. Bowling Green has also now won five straight inside Savage Arena.
- With the win, Bowling Green moves to 3-0 in MAC play for the fifth time in the last seven seasons.
- Lauryn Hovey tallied a team-leading and career-high 17 digs in the match. Hovey added 12 kills to her stat line for her first double-double of the season and the third by a Falcon.
- Hovey landed two aces in the match, bringing her career total to 114, tying her for the program's Rally Scoring Era (2001-Present) record with Paige Penrod. Hovey rounded out her stat line with three block assists and two assists.
- Mia Tyler landed a team-high 17 kills, her second time in the last three matches finishing with 17. She added an assist and two block assists in the match.
- Edyta Waclawczyk recorded a career-high 12 kills for BGSU, doubling her previous career-high. Waclawczyk also set new career-highs in attack attempts (29) and digs (50) while matching her career-high in block assists with two.
- Amanda Otten set the Bowling Green attack, recording a career-high 53 assists in the match, her second time this season eclipsing the 50-mark. Otten added six kills and three digs as well.
- Jessica Andrews and Alexis Mettille each recorded one solo block in the match, continuing their career total tie. Both now have 37 career solo blocks for the Falcons, being in a tie for eighth during the Rally Scoring Era.
- Andrews recorded six block assists in the match, bringing her career total to 224, moving past Corrie Mills for ninth on the Rally Scoring Era career block assists list.
- Andrews totaled seven blocks on the night, giving her 261 as a Falcon. That mark places her ninth on the program's Rally Scoring Era list for career total blocks, passing Taylor Twite.
- Entering the night with the best hitting percentage in the MAC, Mettille registered a team-best .471 on the attack, landing 10 kills on 17 attempts with just two errors.
- Lindsey LaPinta tallied 15 digs, finishing second on the team, and added four assists, matching her career-high.
- Sydnie Hernandez and Avery Anders both registered career-highs in digs with Hernandez finishing with 13 and Anders tallying 12.
- Bowling Green and Toledo have now played 18 consecutive matches against each other that have gone at least four sets, dating back to 2008. Of the 18, 13 have gone four sets and now five have gone five.
- As a team, the Falcons set season-highs in digs (68) and assists (66) while being one shy of matching the season-high for blocks (12) and kills (66).
- The Falcons are now 3-0 this season in matches that go five sets.
