Gerken, Porter & Velasco combine for 56 points in Friday's win in Florida
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The Bowling Green State University women's basketball team outscored Stetson University in every quarter, posting a 79-43 win over the Hatters on Friday afternoon (Nov. 29). The game, part of the Daytona Beach Classic, was held at the Ocean Center.
Two players, fifth-year collegian Erika Porter and freshman Lauren Gerken, scored 20 points apiece for the Falcons (3-4), with Gerken recording the highest total of her young career.
Senior Amy Velasco had a double-double in the win, while three other players came close. Porter had eight rebounds and Gerken seven. Gerken also had three assists in the victory.
Velasco scored 16 points and added 10 assists, six rebounds and a pair of steals, while sophomore Paige Kohler had nine points and seven boards.
Quentarra Mitchell was the lone double-digit scorer for the Hatters (3-3), with 10 points on the afternoon.
BGSU had narrow scoring advantages in the first and third quarters, and the Falcons enjoyed lopsided margins in the second and fourth. The Orange and Brown shot 64.7 percent from the field in the second period, outscoring the Hatters, 29-11, in that period to take a 47-25 lead.
That lead reached a game-high 36 points midway through the fourth period, and BGSU wound up winning by that margin.
Kendal Moxey had eight points and five rebounds, while Kristiana Kulackovska had two points, seven boards and three assists.
FIRST QUARTER
• After Lauren Gerken opened the game with a layup, the Hatters got back-to-back three-pointers. Tiasia McMillan and Jorah Eppley each connected from the arc to give Stetson a 6-2 lead. But, after making the first two triple tries, the Hatters would go just 1-for-21 from long distance in the game's final 38-plus minutes.
• BGSU tied the game on buckets by Laila Harrison and Erika Porter, and Amy Velasco's layup would give the Falcons the lead for good with just over three minutes gone.
• It was a 9-8 game when Velasco hit two free-throw tries, and Porter's layup gave the Falcons a five-point advantage. Porter scored three more points over the next few minutes, and Velasco hit a driving layup in the final minute of the quarter. But, the Hatters matched the Falcons' output over the last few minutes, and Noga Haran's late jumper cut BGSU's lead to 18-14 after 10 minutes.
• Porter had eight points and Velasco six in the opening quarter.
SECOND QUARTER
• Kendal Moxey scored BGSU's first four points of the second period, with her free throws putting the Falcons ahead, 22-16. A Porter hoop prompted a Stetson timeout early in the period.
• Promise Keshi scored for the Hatters, but Paige Kohler connected from the arc to give BGSU a 27-18 lead. And, after a pair of SU free throws, Gerken hit from long distance to put the Falcons up by double digits for the first time.
• Gerken hit another long-range try, and after Cameron Thomas scored at the other end of the court, a Velasco trey and a Gerken jumper gave BG a 38-22 lead. Gerken found Kristiana Kulackovska for a layup, and after Cristina Gil Abad's triple, buckets from Kohler and Moxey made it a 44-25 game. Then, a trey by Gerken in the waning seconds of the half gave the Falcons a 7-0 run and a 22-point halftime lead.
• Velasco had seven assists in the second quarter alone, while Gerken scored 11 points in the quarter, going 3-for-4 from the arc in that period.
THIRD QUARTER
• Velasco opened the second-half scoring with a three-pointer, before Mary McMillan scored three-straight points for the Hatters. But, Porter answered with an 'and-one' putback, making the free throw, and Velasco's jumper gave the Falcons a 55-28 lead.
• Porter would score three consecutive points later in the quarter, with another Velasco bucket making it a 60-34 game. Kohler's late layup put the Falcons ahead, 62-37, as the teams headed to the final quarter.
• Velasco (seven) and Porter (six) combined for 13 of BGSU's 15 third-quarter points.
FOURTH QUARTER
• Kulackovska found Porter for a layup, and Gerken hit a pair of shots from the stripe to put BG ahead by 27. Then, a Gerken triple and a driving layup by Kohler gave the Falcons a 9-0 run and a 71-39 lead as the Hatters used a timeout with 7:12 to go. But, the run continued.
• Emily Siesel found Gerken for a jumper, and Kulackovska again fed Porter for a layup. The run was 13-0, and the score was 75-39. Stetson did not score again until just 3:43 remained in the contest.
• But, after that Quentarra Mitchell hoop, Siesel answered with a layup, and after a Thomas bucket at the 1:08 mark, Moxey's putback capped the scoring.
• Gerken had seven points in the fourth quarter, despite playing less than half of the period. BGSU held the Hatters to just a 3-for-17 (17.6%) success rate in the final 10 minutes.
UP NEXT
• The Falcons will return to the Ocean Center on Saturday afternoon (Nov. 30) to wrap up play in the Daytona Beach Classic. BGSU will meet Arkansas in another 1:15 p.m. start.
• Then, the Falcons return home to face Xavier next Saturday (Dec. 7), with that contest set for a 7:00 p.m. tip at the Stroh Center.
