BGSU Junior Earns Honor After Two Stellar Performances in Last Week's Road Wins
CLEVELAND, Ohio (BGSU Strategic Communications) – Bowling Green State University women's basketball standout Amy Velasco has been named the Mid-American Conference Player of the Week. The announcement was made by the conference office on Tuesday morning (Feb. 27).
Velasco earns the MAC weekly honor for the first time in her Falcon career.
Velasco, a native of Centerville, Ohio (Centerville), averaged a team-leading 25.0 points as the Falcons won a pair of games on the road last week. She also averaged 4.5 rebounds, 4.0 assists and a BG-best 3.0 steals as BG picked up wins at Akron and Northern Illinois.
In Wednesday's (Feb. 21) Akron game, Velasco scored 18 points while adding five rebounds and four assists. Then, at NIU on Saturday (Feb. 24), she exploded for a career-high 32 points, scoring 15 of those points in the fourth quarter alone. In addition to points, she also set a new career standard with six steals. Velasco hit four three-point field goals in the win, and was a perfect 8-for-8 from the free-throw line, adding four rebounds and three assists. Velasco was 4-for-4 from the field and 6-of-6 from the line in that fourth period, and her 15-point total was just two away from tying the school record for points in a quarter.
Velasco was a perfect 12-for-12 from the free-throw line in the two wins, and went 6-for-13 (46.2%) from the three-point line on the week.
Velasco has 14.9 points per game and 4.8 assists per game on the season. In MAC games, she leads the Falcons in scoring (16.0 ppg), assists (5.3 apg) and steals (1.8 spg), and she paces the entire conference in assists.
The Falcons are 14-11 on the year, and BGSU takes a MAC record of 8-6 into a Wednesday (Feb. 28) home game vs. Buffalo. Tipoff for the Falcons and Bulls, currently tied for fourth place in the MAC, is set for shortly after 7:00 p.m. at the Stroh Center.
