Falcons also named to Honor Roll as part of top 20% of teams in Division I
LEXINGTON, Ky. – The Bowling Green State University volleyball program has a history of great success in the classroom as well as on the court, and to no one's surprise, that success continued in 2023-24.
The Falcons have earned the 2024 American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Team Academic Award, sponsored by INTENT. BGSU also earned the additional distinction of AVCA Team Academic Honor Roll, representing the schools in the top 20% of grade-point averages nationally by division. The AVCA announced the honors on Wednesday afternoon (July 17).
BGSU earns the AVCA Team Academic Award for the 24th consecutive year and the 25th time overall.
To qualify, teams must maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.30 or higher, on a 4.0 scale (or 4.1 on a 5.0 scale).
The Falcons have earned the Honor-Roll distinction for the third year in a row and the fifth time in the last seven years. BGSU earned that accolade in 2018 and 2020, in addition to the last three years.
BGSU's 24-year streak of earning the AVCA Team Academic Award is tied for the second longest in Division I, trailing only Indiana State (26 consecutive years). Overall, this year's award marks the 25th in program history for the Falcons, ranking third among NCAA Division I programs, behind only ISU and Morehead State (26 total honors each).
As a team, the Falcons posted a GPA of 3.8 in the spring semester, with 10 student-athletes making the Dean's List and seven posting a perfect 4.000 term GPA.
"Our student-athletes have once again exemplified academic excellence earning the AVCA Academic Award for the 24th year in a row and representing the top 20% of GPAs nationally in Division I," said head coach Danijela Tomic. "This honor reflects their hard work and unwavering dedication to academic success.
"We extend our heartfelt thanks to BGSU faculty and staff and the Student-Athlete Services, especially our academic advisor Meghan Horn, whose support and guidance have been instrumental in achieving this remarkable streak."
On the court, the Falcons will host Oakland in a scrimmage on Saturday afternoon, Aug. 24, beginning at 12:00 p.m. at the Stroh Center. The regular-season opener is set for six days later -- Friday, Aug. 30 -- when BGSU hosts Chicago State in a 6:00 p.m. start. That match is part of the Hampton Inn Invitational, which also will include Illinois and Cincinnati.
