BGSU Bested By Cincinnati In Final Match Of Best Western Invitational

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University volleyball team concluded play in the Best Western Invitational on Sunday (Sept. 1) against Cincinnati at the Stroh Center. BGSU and UC played a close first set with a late Cincinnati run making the difference. Cincinnati carried their momentum into the second set for a 2-0 lead. BGSU challenged in the third set, but another late run for the Bearcats pushed them in front for the 3-0 final. BGSU will transition to the Tru by Hilton Dayton Beavercreek Invite next weekend, taking on UMBC, Dayton and Wright State.Â

The Falcons will hit the road for the first time this season next weekend at the Tru by Hilton Dayton Beavercreek Invite. BGSU will begin the road trip with UMBC on Friday (Sept. 6) followed by Dayton on Saturday (Sept. 7) and Wright State on Sunday (Sept. 8). How It HappenedÂ
Set 1: Cincinnati 25, Bowling Green 22
- The Falcons started strong in the set with a 4-1 stretch to begin play, stretching to a 6-2 advantage.Â
- Cincinnati worked away at the Bowling Green lead, tying up the set score at 7-7. The Falcons reclaimed the lead, but the Bearcats knotted it up once again at 10-10.
- From there, the Falcons rattled off a 4-0 run to push ahead 14-10 and force a Cincinnati timeout, the first of the match. The Falcons added another point out of the timeout for a 5-0 stretch and 15-10 lead.
- Cincinnati soon answered with a 4-0 run of their own, closing the gap to 16-15 and tying it up at 17-17.
- A 3-0 Bowling Green run swung the score back to the Falcons at 21-18 with Cincinnati taking their second timeout of the match.Â
- A 3-0 run for Cincinnati tied the score at 21-21 with a BGSU timeout. Two more points for UC pushed them in front 23-21 with another Falcon timeout.
- BGSU registered a point after the timeout, but Cincinnati took the set 25-22.
Set 2: Cincinnati 25, Bowling Green 14
- Mia Tyler landed a kill to start the second set for the Falcons, but Cincinnati fought back to take a 6-2 lead, including a 4-0 run, with BGSU calling timeout. Cincinnati stretched the run to 5-0 out of the timeout with a 7-2 advantage.
- A 3-0 BGSU answer narrowed the gap to 7-5 with another 3-0 burst soon after, closing it to one point at 9-8.Â
- The Falcons then tied it up at 10-10, but a 3-0 Cincinnati run pushed them back in front 13-10 in the set.
- The teams traded points until a 3-0 Cincinnati run stretched their lead to 17-12. The Falcons tallied a point out of the timeout, but UC continued the run with another five points for an 8-1 stretch and 22-13 lead.
- After a BGSU point, Cincinnati had a 3-0 stretch to close the set with a 25-14 score.
Set 3: Cincinnati 25, Bowling Green 18
- The two teams traded points early in the set before a 3-0 run for the Falcons created a 7-4 lead to force a Cincinnati timeout.
- The trading of points resumed until a 3-0 BGSU run pushed the lead to 11-6, but Cincinnati responded with a 4-0 run to close the gap to 11-10, seeing the Falcons take a timeout.
- The trading of points continued until a 5-0 UC run granted them an 18-15 advantage with Bowling Green utilizing their second timeout of the set.
- The Falcons tallied a point out of the timeout, but a 6-0 Cincinnati stretch pushed the score to 24-16. Bowling Green added two points, but the Bearcats closed the set with a 25-18 score.
