Falcons Down DePaul In Four Sets To Conclude DePaul/UIC Invite

Alexis Mettille Named All-Tournament Team
CHICAGO, Ill. – The Bowling Green State University volleyball team finished out the DePaul/UIC Invite on Saturday (Sept. 14) with a 3-1 victory over host DePaul. The Falcons were able to take the first two sets before DePaul forced a fourth. The Falcons and Blue Demons battled back-and-forth in the fourth set with the Falcons claiming a 25-23 score to secure the win. Bowling Green moves to 5-4 on the season and will return home on Friday (Sept. 20) to host the Ohio State Buckeyes.
Alexis Mettille was named All-Tournament for the Falcons. Over the three matches, Mettille registered 29 kills for the Falcons while maintaining a .500 attack percentage, having just four errors on 50 attacks. She added 10 blocks over the weekend, tallying two solo blocks and eight block assists. Mettille added an assist and an ace to her weekend stat line.

How It Happened
Set 1: Bowling Green 25, DePaul 23
- DePaul began the match with a 5-0 run, forcing an early Bowling Green timeout in the match.
- The Blue Demons added a point out of the timeout, opening with a 6-0 lead before the first BGSU point of the match, coming via a Jordan Newblatt kill.
- The Falcons' response continued with a 5-0 run, including a pair of Lauryn Hovey aces, to knot it up at 7-7 to force a DePaul timeout.
- Out of the timeout, the run for Bowling Green reached 7-0 with a 9-7 advantage for the Falcons.
- After the DePaul point, the Falcons tallied another 3-0 run, making it a 10-1 stretch to extend their lead to 12-8.
- DePaul chipped away at the lead, drawing within one at 15-14, but the Falcons rebuilt their lead before the teams began trading points.
- The Blue Demons worked to tie the score up at 20-20 in the set, seeing Bowling Green take their second timeout of the set.
- The Falcons and Blue Demons played to ties at 21-21, 22-22 and 23-23 before a 3-0 run pushed the Falcons to a 25-23 first set win.
Set 2: Bowling Green 25, DePaul 19
- In the second set, BGSU logged the first point of the set before a 3-0 run for DePaul pushed them ahead 5-3.
- The Falcons were able to respond with a 5-0 run of their own to reclaim the advantage with an 8-5 score and DePaul taking a timeout after back-to-back BGSU blocks.
- DePaul answered with a 3-0 run soon after the timeout to draw within one at 9-8, but a pair of BGSU points kept the Falcons in front 11-8.
- The Blue Demons chipped away to a 14-14 tie with ties again at 15-15, 16-16 and 17-17 before a timeout from DePaul.
- Out of the timeout, the ties continued with the score knotted up at 18-18 before the Falcons edged ahead at 20-18.
- BGSU continued to push ahead, logging a 3-0 run to take a 23-19 lead, including a Lindsey LaPinta ace before taking the set 25-19 with a 5-0 run to close out the set.
Set 3: DePaul 25, Bowling Green 15
- The third set began back-and-forth with DePaul staying in front despite BGSU coming within one at 7-6. The lead stretched to 12-8 for the Blue Demons with the Falcons taking a timeout.
- DePaul stretched their lead to 19-12 to force the second Bowling Green timeout of the set.
- DePaul held on through the end of the set for a 25-15 score, forcing a fourth set in the match.
Set 4: Bowling Green 25, DePaul 23
- DePaul took an early lead in the fourth set before the Falcons battled back to tie it up at 5-5. The Blue Demons re-established their lead, 10-7, with BGSU taking a timeout.
- The timeout sparked a 3-0 run for the Falcons, tying the set at 10-10 before extending to a 4-0 stretch and 11-10 BGSU lead.
- DePaul tied it up at 11-11, but Bowling Green tallied a 4-0 run to make it a 7-1 stretch and 15-11 lead to bring about a Blue Demon timeout.
- Like BGSU earlier in the set, the timeout for DePaul provided a spark that spawned a 4-0 run to tie the set back up at 15-15.
- The Falcons utilized a 3-0 run to reclaim the lead at 19-16 in the set, including the second DePaul timeout during the run.
- DePaul worked back into the set, tying it at 20-20 with the score remaining tied at 21-21 and 22-22.
- The Falcons moved ahead 24-22 before DePaul landed a kill to bring it to 24-23, but a Hovey kill secured the set and the match for the Falcons.

- Lauryn Hovey led the Falcons in kills, digs and aces in the match. Hovey landed 17 kills, the most by a Falcon this season, while adding seven digs and two aces.
- Hovey's two aces in the match pushed her career total to 107, tying her with Julia Walz on the all-time lists. Hovey and Walz are now tied for second during the program's Rally Scoring Era and 10th all-time for career aces.
- Jessica Andrews just missed a double-double for the Falcons, finishing with 11 kills and nine blocks, logging two solo blocks and seven block assists. Andrews was efficient on the attack, finishing with a hitting percentage of .526 with 11 kills on 19 attacks with just one error.
- The two solo blocks for Andrews brings her career total to 33, tying her with Alexis Mettille for 10th during the program's Rally Scoring Era.
- Mettille tallied three block assists in the match to bring her career total to 222, moving her up another spot on the Rally Scoring list. Mettille's total puts her past Corrie Mills for eighth.
- After having a career-high 50 assists on Friday (Sept. 13) in five sets, Amanda Otten followed it up with 43 in four sets for BGSU against DePaul, which would have been her career-high if not for the 50 against Brown.
- Jordan Newblatt finished second on the team in kills for the match, landing 12 while logging a .346 hitting percentage on 26 attacks with three errors.
- The Falcons hit .254 in the match while allowing DePaul to hit .272. This marks BGSU's first win this season while having an attack percentage lower than their opponent.
- The win is the first for the Falcons against DePaul away from Bowling Green in program history, now 3-3 all-time against the Blue Demons.
