Falcons’ Efficient Attack Leads BGVB To Sweep Over Binghamton To Conclude Non-Conference Slate

Andrews, Hobson Combine For 29 Kills, .481 Hitting Percentage
EAST LANSING, Mich. – The Bowling Green State University volleyball team wrapped up the non-conference portion of their 2025 schedule on Saturday (Sept. 20) with a 3-0 sweep over Binghamton. The first set consisted of 16 ties and seven lead changes in a close 25-23 score. However, the Falcons took over from there with just five ties and no lead changes in the second and third sets combined. As a team, Bowling Green hit a season-best .314 on their way to the win, remaining undefeated on Saturdays this season. BGSU ends the non-conference schedule with a 6-6 record entering MAC play next week.
For the Falcons, Avery Hobson topped the stat sheet with a team-leading 19 kills, a .457 hitting percentage and a team-leading and season-high three aces. She was followed closely by Jessica Andrews with 10 kills and a .529 hitting percentage. Amanda Otten set the efficient attack with 38 assists while Kendall Williams topped the block category with six and Sydnie Hernandez led the team in digs with 10.

How It Happened
Set 1: Bowling Green 25, Binghamton 23
- Binghamton tallied the first point of the match, but a kill from Avery Hobson quickly put the Falcons on the board. The first two points set the tone with ties following at each tally up to an 8-8 score.
- A 3-0 run for Binghamton broke the string of ties, putting the Bearcats in front with a 10-8 advantage. From there, the back-and-forth resumed with the score carrying to 13-11.
- The Falcons battled back to tie the score up once again, this time at 13-13. The BGSU run stretched to 3-0, putting Bowling Green in front 14-13. The two teams traded points to the media timeout with BGSU leading, 15-14.
- The ties continued after the media break with the score knotted again at each point from 15 until 20. The Falcons broke the ties with kills from Hobson and Marin Dunaway to push out in front, 22-20, prompting a timeout from Binghamton.
- The back-and-forth continued again after the timeout with BGSU holding their advantage, forcing a timeout from Binghamton with the score at 24-22.
- Binghamton landed a point after the timeout, but the Falcons were able to claim the set with a 25-23 score.
Set 2: Bowling Green 25, Binghamton 18
- The Falcons opened the second set with a pair of points before Binghamton could answer, rolling into a 3-1 advantage for the Orange and Brown.
- The Bearcats worked their way back into the set, tying the score up at 4-4. Bowling Green responded with a 4-0 run, including an ace by Hobson, to push the lead back to 8-4.
- Binghamton stopped the run with a kill, but another 3-0 BGSU run followed for a 7-1 stretch, forcing a timeout from the Bearcat bench with BGSU up 11-5.
- The Bearcats put together a 3-0 run of their own out of the timeout, cutting the score down to 11-8.
- The trading of runs continued with the Falcons recording a 5-0 run in response, increasing BGSU's lead to 16-8 with the second Binghamton timeout called.
- Kendall Williams and Edyta Waclawczyk logged their second straight block after the timeout, making it a 6-0 run and 17-8 BGSU lead. Binghamton battled back with a 3-1 stretch, cutting the score down to 18-11.
- The Falcons tallied a pair of points, but another 5-1 stretch for the Bearcats, including a 4-0 run, narrowed the gap to 21-16 in the set with a BGSU timeout.
- Coming out of the timeout, the Falcons worked for a 3-0 run, including back-to-back Hobson aces, for a 24-16 lead. Binghamton was able to tally two points to extend the set, but a kill from Jessica Andrews secured the set for BGSU.
Set 3: Bowling Green 25, Binghamton 18
- The third set began similarly to the first with ties at each step up to a 3-3 score. Back-to-back BGSU tallies broke the stretch of ties with a 5-3 lead.
- The Falcons were able to roll the momentum into a 4-1 stretch, creating a 7-4 lead, but Binghamton used consecutive points to pull back within one, 7-6.
- The Bearcats kept the pressure on, working to knot the score up at 9-9 behind a 3-1 stretch. The Falcons were able to reclaim the lead, using a 3-1 span of their own to push back out to a 12-10 lead.
- Bowling Green soon followed the 3-1 span with a 3-0 run, stepping out to a 15-11 advantage at the media timeout.
- After the media break, Binghamton recorded a 4-1 stretch, closing the gap to 16-15 with the Falcons pausing the action with a timeout.
- The Falcons responded out of the timeout with a 3-0 run, including an ace from Avery Anders, for a 19-15 lead with the Bearcats taking a timeout.
- The teams traded points up to a 22-18 score with Binghamton calling their second timeout of the set following back-to-back BGSU points.
- The Falcons kept the momentum going through the timeout, closing out the set and the match with a 5-0 run, including an Amanda Otten ace for the final point.

- As a team, the Falcons hit a season-best .314 opposed to Binghamton's .209 mark. BGSU is now 6-0 when logging a hitting percentage higher than their opponent.
- Avery Hobson just missed what would have been her second 20-kill match of the season, finishing with a team-high 19 kills in the three-set match. Hobson added an impressive .457 hitting percentage, logging the 19 kills on 35 attacks with just three errors. Hobson added a team-leading and season-high three aces to her stat line as well.
- Jessica Andrews followed Hobson with a season-high 10 kills and a .529 hitting percentage, landing the 10 kills on just 17 attacks with a lone error.
- Amanda Otten set the efficient Bowling Green attack with 38 assists while finishing second on the team in digs with seven. Otten filled the stat sheet with three kills, an ace and a block.
- Kendall Williams paced the Bowling Green block with six block assists. She also matched her career-high for kills with five, doing so on just eight attacks, resulting in a season-best .375 hitting percentage after only two errors.
- Helen Wilford was perfect on the attack, getting all five of her attack attempts to land for kills. She added two blocks and a dig in the winning effort.
- Sydnie Hernandez topped the stat sheet for the Falcons in digs with 10 while adding two assists and an ace.
- Anastasija Bozic recorded a career-high six digs for Bowling Green while adding her first collegiate assist as well.
- Bowling Green is now 3-0 this season when playing on Saturday and 2-0 when hitting above .300.
- With the win, the Falcons moved to 6-6 on the season, entering MAC play with a .500 record. BGSU has been either a game above or below .500 entering MAC play each of the last three seasons.
- The win marks the third all-time for BGSU against Binghamton, keeping Bowling Green a perfect 3-0 all-time against the Bearcats.
- The win will go down as the first road sweep of the season for the Falcons after picking up their first home sweep earlier this week against Oakland on Wednesday (Sept. 17).
