Hovey Earns All-Tournament Selection Behind 64 Kills Over Three Matches
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – The Bowling Green State University volleyball team took a nationally-ranked opponent to five sets for the second straight day, going five against No. 23 Georgia Tech on Friday (Sept. 5). Concluding the team's portion of the Stacey Clark Classic, the Falcons jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the match, but the Yellow Jackets fought back to take the match in five sets. In three matches against ranked opponents, the Falcons went four sets against No. 15 Kansas and five sets against both No. 17 Purdue and No. 23 Georgia Tech.
Lauryn Hovey again led the BGSU attack, landing 22 kills for the Orange and Brown on her way to an All-Tournament selection. Avery Hobson added a double-double with 17 kills and 10 digs, both season-highs while the digs total tied for the team lead. Amanda Otten just missed a double-double herself with 45 assists and nine digs.

How It Happened
Set 1: Bowling Green 25, Georgia Tech 19
- Lauryn Hovey opened the match with a kill for the Falcons, but Georgia Tech answered with a 3-0 run to move in front 3-1. The trading of runs swung back to the Falcons with a 3-0 BGSU burst to take a 4-3 lead before Georgia Tech tied it up, 4-4.
- Bowling Green went back to work, utilizing a 4-0 run to create a 7-1 stretch, including an ace from Hovey. The run built an 8-4 lead for the Falcons.
- The two teams traded points to a 9-6 score, but a 3-1 stretch for the Falcons pushed the lead back to 12-7. From there, the back-and-forth resumed to a 13-8 tally.
- Georgia Tech logged back-to-back points, cutting the score down to 13-10, but the trading of points carried the score to 15-11 with the media timeout.
- Out of the timeout, the Yellow Jackets landed a point, but the Falcons responded with two for a 17-12 lead, prompting a timeout from Georgia Tech.
- The Yellow Jackets added a point after the break, but the Falcons fought back with a 4-0 run, including an ace from Isabelle Laube, taking a 21-13 lead and forcing the second Georgia Tech timeout.
- Coming out of the timeout, Georgia Tech worked for a 4-1 stretch, cutting into the lead at 22-17. The back-and-forth resumed from there, carrying the score to the end of the set with a block from Jessica Andrews and Ava Buddelmeyer for the 25-19 score.
Set 2: Bowling Green 25, Georgia Tech 22
- Georgia Tech opened the second set with a kill, but Avery Hobson followed with one of her own to quickly knot the score. Like the first set, the Yellow Jackets jumped out to a 3-1 lead, this time with a 2-0 burst after the 1-1 start.
- Mirroring the first set, the two teams played to a 4-4 tie with an ace from Hovey knotting it up. Buddelmeyer followed with a kill to push the Falcons in front before an Andrews solo block.
- The run for the Falcons reached 5-0 with a 7-4 advantage. From there, the teams went back-and-forth to a 9-6 score in favor of the Falcons for the second straight set.
- Bowling Green was able to start another run, this one in the form of a 3-0 burst, creating a 9-2 stretch that built an 11-6 advantage for BGSU.
- After a Yellow Jacket point, the Falcons added two more for a 13-7 lead to force a timeout from the Georgia Tech bench.
- Another point for BGSU out of the break made it a 3-0 run and 12-3 stretch for the Orange and Brown with a 14-7 lead.
- The Yellow Jackets landed back-to-back points, but the trading of points followed for a 20-14 score. Georgia Tech ended the back-and-forth with a 3-0 run, cutting the score to 20-16 with a BGSU timeout.
- After the stoppage, the run for Georgia Tech reached 6-0, bringing the score to 20-19. BGSU stopped the run, but the Yellow Jackets managed to tie it up at 21-21.
- Bowling Green responded with back-to-back points, reclaiming the lead at 23-21 with Georgia Tech taking a timeout.
- The teams traded points out of the break with a Hovey kill securing the set for the Falcons.
Set 3: Georgia Tech 25, Bowling Green 22
- The Yellow Jackets opened the third set with a 3-1 stretch, but the Falcons worked to tie the score back up at 4-4. Georgia Tech moved in front 5-4, but a 3-0 run for BGSU, including an ace from Avery Anders, made it a 7-5 Bowling Green advantage.
- Georgia Tech tallied another 3-1 stretch, tying the set up at 8-8. Another kill from Hovey kept the Falcons in front with another tie following at 9-9 and again at 10-10.
- The Yellow Jackets broke the string of ties with a 3-0 run, taking a 12-10 lead. BGSU added a point, but the Georgia Tech stretch expanded to 5-1 with a 14-11 score before the media timeout at 15-12.
- The back-and-forth continued with the score moving to 17-13 and Bowling Green taking a timeout. After the regroup in the timeout, the Falcons rattled off a 3-0 run, cutting the lead down to 17-16 to force a Georgia Tech timeout.
- Georgia Tech used two points out of the timeout to reestablish their lead at 19-16. The two teams went back-and-forth to a 20-17 score, but a 3-0 BGSU run pulled the Falcons back within one. An ace for Hobson followed to knot it up at 20-20.
- The back-and-forth resumed, taking the score to 21-21 and 22-22 before back-to-back Georgia Tech points made it 24-22 with a BGSU timeout. The Yellow Jackets recorded a point out of the timeout for the set.
Set 4: Georgia Tech 25, Bowling Green 17
- Georgia Tech tallied the first point of the fourth set, but a kill from Hobson evened the score at 1-1. The back-and-forth resulted in a 2-2 tie, continuing at 3-3 and 4-4.
- The Yellow Jackets broke the string of ties with a 6-0 run for a 9-4 lead, seeing the Falcons call a timeout.
- Coming out of the break, Andrews halted the run with a solo block at the net. From there, the teams went back to trading points, taking the score to 10-6. A 3-0 burst for Georgia Tech moved the score to 13-6 with the second BGSU timeout.
- The two teams traded points after the break, but a 4-0 run for the Falcons followed to cut the lead down to 14-11 with a Georgia Tech timeout.
- A Yellow Jacket point paused the run, but the Falcons added two more, including a massive block by Andrews and Hovey, for a 6-1 stretch, cutting the score down to 15-13.
- A 4-1 stretch for Georgia Tech extended their lead out to 19-14. The Falcons tallied a pair, but Georgia Tech matched it for a 21-16 score, turning it into a 3-0 run for a 22-16 tally.
- Georgia Tech was able to close out the set from there with a 25-17 score.
Set 5: Georgia Tech 15, Bowling Green 9
- Georgia Tech opened the third set with a 4-0 burst with Bowling Green taking a timeout. Hovey ended the run out of the timeout with a kill, starting a back-and-forth.
- The score carried to 7-3 in the trading of points before consecutive BGSU points made it 7-4 with a Georgia Tech timeout. A point for the Yellow Jackets made it 8-4 with the teams switching sides.
- The run for Georgia Tech reached 3-0 with a 10-4 lead to force the second BGSU timeout of the set. Hovey landed a kill out of the break for a 10-5 score.
- The Yellow Jackets put together a 3-0 run to carry the score to 13-5 with a kill from Hobson ending the run.
- The momentum from the Hobson kill turned into a 3-0 run to force a Georgia Tech timeout with the score at 13-8.
- After the timeout, the run for the Falcons continued, reaching 4-0 with a 13-9 tally. However, the Yellow Jackets held on for the 15-9 score.

- Lauryn Hovey logged another 20-kill match, finishing with 22 for the Falcons. The mark pushed Hovey's career total to 1,382 kills to move her past Danielle Tonyan (2010-13) on the all-time lists, now ranking fourth during the Rally Scoring Era and seventh all-time.
- Hovey also led the team in aces with three in the match. She now has 156 as a Falcon, tying her with Lisa Mika (1988-91) for second all-time in program history for career aces.
- Hovey's efforts for the weekend earned her All-Tournament honors. She logged a double-double in each of the first two matches and totaled 63 kills over the three matches.
- Avery Hobson tallied her first double-double of the season, finishing with a season-high 17 kills and 10 digs with her digs total tying for the team lead with Sydnie Hernandez.
- In her return to the Orange and Brown, Jessica Andrews led the team in blocks with six while adding seven kills.
- Amanda Otten set the BGSU attack with 45 assists and just missed a double-double, finishing with nine digs.
