Eddie George Selected as Winner of the 21st MFC Legends Award
January 30, 2026 | Football
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - Maxwell Football Club Executive Director Mark Wolpert announced that Bowling Green's Mike and Jan Wilcox Head Football Coach Eddie George has been selected as the winner of the 21st MFC Legends Award. George stands as one of the most distinguished figures in football, embodying excellence, leadership, and a sustained impact across every level of the game. A native of Philadelphia, George rose to national prominence at The Ohio State University, where his powerful running style, durability, and commanding presence made him one of the most dominant players of his era. His historic 1995 season culminated in winning the Doak Walker Award,  Maxwell Award, and Heisman Trophy, after rushing for 1,927 yards and 24 touchdowns, cementing his legacy as one of the greatest players in Buckeye history. His collegiate success set the foundation for a remarkable professional career, as he was selected 14th overall in the 1996 NFL Draft by the Houston Oilers and immediately became one of the league's premier running backs.
George emerged as the cornerstone of the franchise during its transition to Tennessee, earning NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year honors and helping define the identity of the Titans for nearly a decade. Over nine NFL seasons, he rushed for more than 10,000 yards, earned four Pro Bowl selections, and started 128 consecutive games—an extraordinary feat that underscored his toughness, consistency, and professionalism. His leadership and production were instrumental in guiding the Titans to Super Bowl XXXIV, and his influence extended well beyond statistics, as he became widely respected for setting standards in preparation, accountability, and team culture.
Following his playing career, George continued to leave an indelible mark on the sport through coaching, mentorship, and advocacy. He revitalized the football program at Tennessee State University, leading the Tigers to the 2023 Big South–OVC championship and an FCS playoff appearance while emphasizing academic achievement, leadership development, and opportunity for his student-athletes. In the next chapter of his coaching career, George was named head coach at Bowling Green State University, where he continues to bring his leadership, vision, and commitment to excellence to the collegiate level. His success as a coach reflects the same values that defined his playing career—discipline, resilience, and a commitment to excellence—while reinforcing his role as a steward of the game's future.
In recognition of his extraordinary contributions to football and his lasting influence on generations of players, coaches, and fans, the Maxwell Football Club is proud to honor Eddie George with the MFC Legends Award. This distinction celebrates not only his elite achievements on the field but also his enduring leadership, integrity, and service to the sport. George's career exemplifies the ideals upon which the Maxwell Football Club was founded, making him a truly fitting recipient of this prestigious honor.
The formal presentation of the MFC Legends Award will be held on Saturday, March 14, 2026, at the Coca-Cola Roxy Theater in Atlanta, Georgia. Tickets are now available for purchase at https://maxwellfootballclub.org/gala-tickets. The Maxwell Football Club will also present its other national awards, ranging from high school to the professional ranks, at the event.
