Defensive Duo Recognized After BGSU's Win Over Belmont
ST. LOUIS, Mo. -- A pair of Bowling Green State University men's soccer standouts have earned Missouri Valley Conference honors. Freshman Matheus Filipe has been named MVC Defensive Player of the Week, while senior Jason Ball has been tabbed MVC Goalkeeper of the Week. The league office made the announcement on Tuesday morning (Oct. 27).
Ball has been named the league's 'keeper of the week for the third time in four weeks, having also earned the award on Oct. 6 and Oct. 20. Filipe earns an MVC weekly honor for the first time in his young Falcon career, but BG has earned the Defensive-P-O-T-W honor three times in the lsat four weeks as well, with freshman Aidan Flanders (Oct. 6) and senior Gus Peacock (Oct. 20) having been recognized on previous October Tuesdays.
Ball, who hails from Miamisburg, Ohio (Miamisburg H.S.), made eight saves as the Falcons remained in first place with a 2-0 win over Belmont on Sunday (Oct. 25). Ball and the Falcons withstood a total of 31 shots, including 21 in the second half, by the Bruins, keeping BU off of the scoreboard after BG had built an early lead. Ball currently leads the nation in saves pct. (913) and ranks third in the country in GAA (0.50), and he has made at least seven saves in four of the Falcons' five MVC matchups.
Filipe, a native of Juiz de Fora, Brazil (Escola Estadual Francisco Menezes Filho), helped Ball and the Falcons keep that clean sheet from his center-back position. The shutout was the Falcons' third in a row and fourth in the last eight matches. Filipe played all 90 minutes in the win.
Filipe, Ball and the Falcons return to action on Wednesday night (Oct. 28), closing the home portion of the regular-season schedule with a non-conference match vs. Wilmington College. First touch is set for 7:00 p.m. at Cochrane Stadium, and admission, as is the case for all of BGSU's home action, is free.
Then, BGSU is idle until the following Wednesday (Nov. 4), when the Falcons end the regular season with a match at UIC.
BGSU, as mentioned, is currently in first place in the MVC, and the Falcons have clinched no worse than the number-three seed for the conference tournament. BGSU is also guaranteed a home game in the league tourney, which will either be in the quarterfinal (Nov. 8) or semifinal (Nov. 11) round.
