Goals by Perez-Cernuda, McCoy send Falcons to victory in "Bud Lewis Game"
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University men's soccer team won for the seventh consecutive match, posting a 2-1 victory over Wilmington College in non-conference action Wednesday night (Oct. 28) at Cochrane Stadium.
Freshman Luciano Perez-Cernuda and sophomore Tyson McCoy scored goals for the Falcons (8-6-2 [4-1-0 Missouri Valley Conference]). BGSU's seven-match winning streak is the program's longest in almost three decades.
Perez-Cernuda scored for the second-straight game, giving the Falcons a 1-0 lead in the 24th minute. That goal came off of a set piece, as Perez-Cernuda fired a shot from just outside the 18-yard box off of a backheel pass from senior Saul Rios.
BGSU took that lead into halftime, but the Quakers (6-6-6 [1-3-3 Ohio Athletic Conference]) equalized just 21 seconds after halftime, on a spectacular strike by Aidan Barnishin.
The Falcons outshot Wilmington by a 15-4 over the final 44-plus minutes of the match, however, and BG broke through in the 72nd minute. Sophomore Caue Ramos headed the ball to McCoy near the top of the 18. McCoy took several touches to his right and fired a shot that found the lower-left-hand corner of the net.
For the match, BGSU had advantages of 24-12 in total shot attempts, 8-5 in shots on goal and 6-0 in corner kicks.
Senior Enzo Gil picked up the win in goal, making four saves on the night. Three goalkeepers saw action for the Quakers, with Judah Hanks and Joe Mielstrup each stopping three of four shots on goal. Hanks played the first half, while Meilstrup played 30-plus minutes in the second half. Oliver Metz played the final 14:20 and did not face a shot on goal.
Ramos had 12 shots in the match, equaling the Quakers' team total.
