Falcons Capture Inaugural FFCU Battle of I-75
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio -- In a year full of countless great stories for Bowling Green State University Athletics, one of the biggest of the season was not just one victory, but a collection of them. In the first edition of the new Fremont Federal Credit Union Battle Of I-75 Rivalry Series, Bowling Green claimed an 81-60 victory over Toledo. Eight Falcon teams either claimed head-to-head victories or outperformed the Rockets in their respective MAC Championships. BGSU Athletics is incredibly grateful to Fremont Federal Credit Union for their role in the creation of this new series.
"We're proud to support the Battle of I-75 rivalry series, and all that it means to our communities," said Nick Cray, President and CEO for Fremont Federal Credit Union.
In this competition, the winning team in a head-to-head game claimed five points. For sports where there were no head-to-head matchups, the team that finished higher in the MAC Championship scored 10 points. Finally, the winning football team scored 21 points for their side of the rivalry.
The Falcons landed a huge punch early in the competition when the football team, led by Head Coach Eddie George, made a historic comeback to defeat UT 28-23 despite going down 21-0 with the effort earning the Orange and Brown 21 points in the competition.
"I'm just really proud of our boys and how we handled adversity," said George. "We talk a lot about guts, ethos, having faith, built for the fourth quarter."
BGSU continued to overcome adversity as volleyball, men's basketball, and women's basketball all rebounded from early losses to land decisive victories in the Stroh Center against the Rockets. The Falcons came alive during the winter swimming and diving capturing a head-to-head meet while track and field at the MAC Indoor Championships earned the Falcons important points in January and February. The BGSU Victory was clinched during the spring as both men's and women's golf as well as track and field all soared higher than the Rockets in their respective MAC Championships.
"Winning the Fremont Federal Credit Union Battle of I-75 Rivalry Trophy is a testament to the heart, determination, and pride that define BGSU Athletics," said David Anderson, general manager for Falcon Sports Properties at Bowling Green. "Our student-athletes, coaches, alumni, and fans continue to show what it means to be a Falcon. Beating Toledo and hoisting the trophy in Bowling Green is a moment our entire community can celebrate together."
BGSU will recognize the student-athletes' efforts and celebrate the Fremont Federal Credit Union Battle Of I-75 Rivalry Series win at the football home opener on September 5 against Tarleton St at 12 p.m.
