Student-Athlete Employment
A BGSU student-athlete may receive legitimate employment earnings from authorized on- or off-campus employers throughout the school year and during vacation periods.
However, all BGSU student-athletes must receive approval from the Compliance Office prior to employment.
Student-athlete employment must meet the following guidelines:
* The student-athlete’s compensation may not include any payment or benefit from the employer based on the student-athlete’s athletics ability, reputation, or fame;
* The student athlete is compensated only for work actually performed;
* The student-athlete is compensated at a rate equal to the going rate for similar services in that area;
* A student athlete may also receive compensation for teaching or coaching sports skills or techniques in his or her sport on a fee-for-lesson basis.
Fee-for-Lesson Basis Guidelines:
* BGSU Facilities are not used;
* Playing lessons are not permitted (ex. Simply “playing” against lesson participant)
* The student-athlete must receive prior approval from the Compliance Office and he or she must keep on file documentation of the recipient of the lesson(s) and the fee for the lesson(s) provided during any time of the year;
* The compensation is paid by the lesson recipient (or the recipient’s family) and not another individual;
* A student-athlete who is teaching lessons on a fee-for-lesson basis to more than one individual at a time must provide instruction to each individual that is comparable to the instruction that would be provided during a private lesson;
* The student-athlete does not use his or her name, picture, or appearance to promote or advertise the availability of fee-for-lesson sessions.
