Todd Reirden enters his first season coaching his alma mater after being named the Falcons[apos] new assistant coach on July 19th.
The former BGSU defensemen and center[apos]s (1990-94) hire marks the first time that the Falcon hockey program will be run by an all-alumni coaching staff, as he joins head coach Scott Paluch (1984-88) and Doug Schueller (1997-2001) who both dawned the orange and brown colors in their college days.
[quote]I am extremely excited to be coming back to Bowling Green as a coach and am looking forward to working with the players and providing them with an opportunity to reach their potential as student-athletes,[quote] said Reirden. [quote]The experiences that Bowling Green taught me both on and off the ice have provided me with the foundation to accomplish my hockey dream of playing in the NHL and also allowing me to succeed in life.[quote]
Reirden spent four seasons with Bowling Green from 1990-94 where he compiled 76 points (24g, 52a) in 140 career games. After starting his Falcon career as a walk-on he eventually worked his way to a successful NHL career that spanned parts of eight seasons.
Reirden spent the past 13 seasons playing hockey professionally, including stints with the Edmonton Oilers, St. Louis Blues, Atlanta Thrashers, Anaheim Ducks (Stanley Cup runners-up) and the Phoenix Coyotes of the National Hockey League.
[quote]I am extremely excited to welcome Todd back to Bowling Green as a member of our coaching staff,[quote] said head coach Scott Paluch. [quote]Todd has gained a wealth of hockey knowledge in his 13 years of professional hockey. His outstanding work ethic and his passion for Falcon hockey make him a perfect fit for our program.[quote]
The Deerfield, Ill., native, was a 12th round draft pick of the New Jersey Devils in the 1990 NHL Draft. He and his wife Shelby reside in Bowling Green and have a five-year-old son, Travis.
