Heidi Schlegel has wrapped up her first season on the women's basketball staff at Bowling Green State University. Head coach Jennifer Roos announced Schlegel's hiring as the program’s video coordinator on August 4, 2016.

Schlegel, a native of Wapakoneta, Ohio, had a stellar playing career at Youngstown State University. She came to BGSU after playing professionally in Germany during the previous season.

Schlegel capped off her storied playing career at YSU by being named to the All-Horizon League First Team in each of her last two seasons. She scored 1,729 points in her career, good for fourth in school history. Schlegel is the program’s all-time leader in free throws made, and she still ranks fifth in career minutes played, sixth in both games played and double-doubles and seventh in rebounding (796).

Schlegel scored 621 points as a junior and 584 as a senior, for a total of 1,205 points over her final two seasons with the Penguins.

Schlegel played in seven games in her freshman season of 2010-11 before missing the rest of the season due to injury. She applied for and received a medical redshirt. Schlegel averaged nearly 10 points per game in each of the next two seasons, before exploding for 20.0 ppg and 8.0 rebounds per game as a redshirt junior in 2013-14. She set a school record for points by a junior en route to all-league honors, and she also was named to the Academic All-Horizon League Team and the HL All-Tournament Team.

In her final season, Schlegel averaged 18.3 ppg and 9.4 rpg, earning all-league and academic all-conference honors for the second-straight season. She became YSU’s first-ever Senior CLASS Award candidate in women’s basketball, and participated in the WBCA’s “So You Want to Be a Coach” program in 2015.

During that senior year, Schlegel ranked third in the Horizon League in both scoring and rebounding. She exploded for a career-high 38 points against Milwaukee in late February, then matched that total with 38 more points just two days later against Valparaiso. For her career, Schlegel scored in double digits 82 times, ranking fifth in school history, and she had 25 double-doubles.

Prior to heading to YSU, Schlegel was an All-Ohio Second-Team selection as a senior at Wapakoneta H.S. She helped lead the Redskins to the Division II state championship game in her junior season, and she became just the fourth player in school history to score 1,000 career points, despite missing half of her sophomore year.

In 2015-16, Schlegel played for BG Donau Ries in the German First Division. She earned Player-of-the-Week honors in November of 2015.

In addition to her playing experience, Schlegel has worked numerous camps at YSU, Toledo and Ohio University. She made a service trip to India with the Coalition for Christian Outreach in May of 2013.

Schlegel earned a Bachelor of Science degree in middle childhood education from Youngstown State in May of 2014. She is just two classes shy of earning a Masters of Interdisciplinary Communication degree at YSU.
