Tanner Barton enters his third season as the head coach of the Bowling Green women's swimming and diving program in 2026-27.
In his first two seasons at BGSU, Barton guided the Falcons to significant progress, highlighted by a historic 2025-26 campaign. Bowling Green finished 13-3 overall and 3-1 in MAC dual meets, marking the program's first winning conference dual-meet record since 2022. The Falcons also opened the season 12-0, the best start in program history, while earning wins over Miami (Ohio) and Eastern Michigan for the first time since the 2015-16 and 2014-15 seasons, respectively. BGSU also captured the Battle of I-75 against Toledo for the first time since 2022.
The Falcons capped the 2025-26 season with their first top-30 finish at the CSCAA National Invitational Championship, placing 30th among 52 teams. BGSU qualified five relays for the meet and had three individual finalists, after having no individual finalists at the NIC the previous season.
Under Barton's leadership, the Falcons have continued to make significant strides in the pool. BGSU has established at least nine new individual top-10 times in program history during his first two seasons, including Emily McNicol's 2:00.15 in the 200-yard backstroke at the 2025 Magnus Cup Invitational.
Barton has also placed an emphasis on the continued development and support of the diving program. During his tenure, BGSU installed new Rough-Tek surfaces on the 5-meter and 7-meter platforms, while three Falcons qualified for NCAA Zone competition in 2025 and four qualified in 2026. Natalia Mayorga capped her junior season by becoming the program's first MAC champion since 2022, winning the 3-meter dive at the 2026 MAC Championships.
Academically, Barton's teams have excelled at a national level. The Falcons have earned CSCAA Academic All-America honors for 16 straight seasons, including each of Barton’s first four semesters at BGSU. His teams have posted the highest team GPA in the MAC each semester, including a 3.77 GPA in fall 2024, a 3.69 in spring 2025, a 3.81 in fall 2025 and a 3.85 in spring 2026. The Falcons earned CSCAA Scholar All-America Team honors in each of those semesters, with their GPAs consistently ranking among the top Division I swimming and diving programs in the country. The 3.77 GPA in fall 2024 ranked seventh nationally among Division I women's programs, while the 3.85 GPA in spring 2026 ranked fourth in the nation.
In Barton's first season at BGSU, the Falcons finished sixth at the 2025 MAC Championships, their best finish at the conference meet since 2022. Ava Vial earned second-team All-MAC honors after finishing third in the 200-yard breaststroke, while the Falcons established multiple new top-10 times in program history.
Barton came to Bowling Green after spending four seasons as the head coach of men's and women's swimming and diving at John Carroll University. During his tenure, he led the Blue Streaks to eight Ohio Athletic Conference championships, including four men's and four women's titles. His teams produced 21 CSCAA first-team All-Americans, 11 CSCAA first-team Scholar All-Americans, 27 OAC records and 104 conference championship titles. His coaching staffs were named OAC Coaching Staff of the Year in each of his four seasons.
Prior to John Carroll, Barton spent one season as the head men's and women's swimming and diving coach at Anderson University in Indiana. He began his collegiate coaching career as a graduate assistant at Ball State during the 2017-18 season.
A native of Dublin, Ohio, Barton graduated summa cum laude from Ball State's Honors College in 2017 with a bachelor's degree in health science and Spanish. He earned a master's degree in exercise science with an emphasis in sport performance from Ball State in 2019 and a Master of Business Administration with a concentration in management and organizational leadership from John Carroll in August 2024.
