Matt Nicholson joined the BGSU ice hockey staff in the summer of 2025, with years of experience coaching at the NCAA Division I level. A native of London, Ont., Nicholson was a solid defenseman at Colgate University, where he totaled 123 games played from 2000-2004.

Following his collegiate playing career, Nicholson began coaching at the NCAA Division I level in 2009, where he joined the Robert Morris staff as an assistant. In 2014, he helped the Colonials to an Atlantic Hockey Tournament Championship, and an appearance in the NCAA Tournament. He served the Colonials until 2015, where he landed a head coaching gig at the junior hockey level with the Amarillo Bulls of the North American Hockey League (NAHL).

After spending two seasons in Amarillo, Nicholson returned to NCAA hockey, as he joined the Niagara University coaching staff as an assistant in 2017, where he coached until 2020. Prior to the start of the 2021-22 season, Nicholson stayed in Atlantic Hockey, as he began as an assistant at Mercyhurst. After spending a year in Erie, Penn., Nicholson returned to Robert Morris until 2025, when he joined coach Dennis Williams at BGSU.
