Story No. 6 From 2011-12: Women's Basketball Wins MAC Regular Season Crown
June 28, 2012 | General, Women's Basketball
Throughout the summer, the Bowling Green Athletics Department will be counting down the top 10 stories of the 2011-12 school year, as voted on by members of the Athletics Department administration and the Athletics Communications Department. We will release the list one at a time throughout the summer, until the No. 1 moment of 2011-12 is revealed on Wednesday, Aug. 1 -- the day before BGSU football camp opens.
It was supposed to be a rebuilding season. And after opening the year with a 31-point loss at Dayton, it certainly appeared to be so. But the BGSU women's basketball team recovered to push No. 16 Purdue to the wire just six days later in a one-point loss. From there, the Falcons never looked back, posting a 24-7 record, including a 14-2 mark in the Mid-American Conference, to earn the MAC regular season title and the team's eighth consecutive MAC East Division crown.
The season definitely was not without a few bumps along the way. Head Coach Curt Miller suffered a mild stroke midway through the season and Associate Head Coach Jennifer Roos stepped up to lead the team to a pair of conference wins in the midst of a 13-game winning streak. Miller was eventually named head coach at Indiana and Roos was named the new leader of the program. BGSU clinched the East Division title with a 64-55 win over Miami and earned the outright MAC Championship with a 91-48 victory over Kent State to close out the regular season. Although the team lost in the MAC Tournament semifinals and then had its season cut short in a WNIT loss, the program continued to churn out championships in 2011-12.
