Charlie Edwards completed his third season as assistant men's soccer coach at Bowling Green State University in 2013. Head coach Eric Nichols announced the hiring of Edwards in March of 2011.
“Charlie has great energy and drive, as well as solid experiences as a player and a coach,” said Nichols at the time of the hiring. “He is sure to have an immediate and positive impact on the program, and we are thrilled to have him join us.”
Nichols, Edwards and the staff solidified the Falcons’ defensive corps, as BGSU’s defense has allowed fewer goals than the previous year in every season of the Nichols tenure. The 2012 Falcons had seven shutouts for the second-straight year, and the 2013 team kept eight clean sheets.
Edwards helped the Falcons post seven shutouts in 2011 as well as in 2012. Prior to that 2011 campaign, BGSU had not blanked as many as seven opponents since 2001.
Edwards and the Falcons post a 6-7-6 overall record in 2013. BGSU went 2-2-2 in MAC play. The team scored the most goals since 2003, and allowed the fewest goals since the '01 campaign.
BGSU's team goals-against average of 0.89 was 30th best in the nation in 2013. The Falcons posted the most shutouts (eight) since the 1998 season, and lost the fewest matches (seven) since '97.
The ‘12 campaign saw the Falcons post eight wins against a tough schedule. BGSU’s 8-9-3 overall mark represented the team’s most wins and highest winning percentage since 2003. The Brown and Orange posted two wins and a tie against teams that advanced to the NCAA Championships.
BG went 3-3-1 in Mid-American Conference play, earning the fourth seed in the eight-team conference and a bid to the league tournament. The Falcons fell on the road to the nation's top-ranked team in the MAC Tournament's semifinal round.
The 2012 season also saw the Falcons go undefeated in overtime (2-0-3), and recapture the I-75 Cup with a victory over Wright State. BGSU had two All-MAC First-Team selections for the first time since 2002, as Danny Baraldi and Anthony Grant both were named to the all-conference first team.
In the classroom, the Falcons received the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Team Academic Award for the third consecutive season. The award is given to programs that have achieved a minimum team GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale.
The 2011 season saw the Falcons post a 7-8-3 overall record. The seven wins, the program's highest total since the 2003 season, included a season-opening victory over ninth-ranked Michigan before a crowd of over 2,100 at Cochrane Field. The Brown and Orange went 4-2-1 at Cochrane, and BGSU's defense posted a total of seven shutouts on the year, the program's most in a decade.
Edwards came to BG from the University of Dayton. He spent the 2010 season as a volunteer assistant on the Flyers' staff. He worked primarily with the goalkeepers for head coach Dennis Currier, but also performed a myriad of duties in the office and on the pitch. Edwards helped with administrative duties and travel arrangements, and also helped to plan camps and manage the recruit database.
In the fall of 2010, Dayton’s ‘keeper, Tyler Picard, was named to the All-Atlantic 10 Conference Second Team. Picard had eight complete-match shutouts and a goals-against average of just 0.79.
“I am very excited for the opportunity that Coach Nichols has given me to be a part of the staff here at BGSU,” said Edwards at the time of his hiring. "I respect what Coach Nichols is doing here; this program is moving in a positive direction. I want to continue that success and really have an impact on the program.”
Edwards worked at the University of Central Florida prior to heading to Dayton. While at UCF, he worked with the team’s five ‘keepers, helping to plan and conduct goalkeeping sessions, and performed various administrative duties for the program.
A 2008 graduate of the University of Louisville, Edwards was a two-year starter for the Cardinals. He was a member of the ’07 team that advanced to the semifinal round of the Big East Tournament and the second round of the NCAA Championships. A native of Lilburn, Ga., he was a member of the conference’s Commissioner’s Honor Roll in both 2006 and ‘07.
In addition to his stints with Dayton and UCF, Edwards also has coaching experience with several teams at the club level. He coached the Oldham County Thoroughbreds in 2008 and 2009, serving as head coach of the U-10 and U-12 boys’ teams while also serving as the head goalkeeping coach of the top club-level squad. He also was the had coach of the Metro FC U-15 and U-18 boys’ teams.
Edwards graduated from U of L in the spring of 2008 with a bachelor’s degree in sport administration. He currently holds a USSF “D” coaching license as well as a level III NSCAA National Goalkeeper Diploma.
