Nov. 21 - Bowling Green 53, Hawaii 49 - Pepsi One/Nextel Challenge
December 27, 1999 | Men's Basketball
Nov. 21, 1999
The Falcons turned up the defense in the second half, especially in the last four minutes of the game, to win the Pepsi One/Nextel Challenge hosted by the University of Hawaii. It was the first regular season tournament title won by a BG team since the 1978-79 squad captured the Blade-Glass City Classic hosted by Toledo.
Hawaii scored 10 straight points early in the first half to take a 16-11 lead at the 10:20 mark. Hawaii would lead the rest of the half, but BG would cut into the deficit trailing only 25-23 at the break.
In the second half, there were four lead changes in the early part before Hawaii took the lead 34-33 at the 14:59 mark.
The Rainbows led 49-46 on a Marquette Alexander basket at the 4:17 mark, but that would be Hawaii's last points of the game. One Anthony Stacey free throw at 3:48 pulled the Falcons within two, and a pair of Dave Esterkamp free tosses 24 seconds later tied the game.
Dubrey Black hit one free throw at the 2:18 mark to put the Falcons ahead by a 50-49 count and an Esterkamp lay up at the 2:02 mark, off a feed from Stacey, put BG ahead by three points. A Keith McLeod free throw with three seconds left iced the game for the Falcons and were the last points of the game.
McLeod led the Falcons with 11 points as six of the eight players who saw action the game scored six or more points.
McLeod and Stacey earned spots on the all-tournament team.
