Bowling Green opened its regular-season with a 60-43 triumph over Jackson State on the first day of the Pepsi One/Nextel Challenge in Honolulu.
The Falcons will face Hawaii, an 84-68 winner of Tennessee-Martin, in the championship game which will be played at 1 a.m. eastern time on Sunday night/Monday morning.
BG led 35-18 at the half as it held JSU to a 6-of-27 (22.2%) shooting in the first half while the Falcons were converting at over 46%.
The Falcons opened early 7-2 (16:42) and 24-8 (8:09) leads and led by as many as 18 points at 33-15 with 1:57 left in the first half.
Keith McLeod (10), Dave Esterkamp (9), and Anthony Stacey (7) combined to score 26 of BG's 35 points in the first half.
BG built the advantage to 20 points at 43-23 at the 13:51 mark of the second half, before Jackson State made a run.
They cut the BG lead to 43-31 with eight straight points at the 9:04 mark and got as close as 49-39 at the 5:51 mark. But, BG scored the next seven points to increase the advantage to 17 points and they went on for the victory.
Anthony Stacey led three BG players in double figures with 18, while Keith McLeod added 15, and Dave Esterkamp tossed in 10. Len Matela had 12 rebounds and added nine points off the bench.
