Bowling Green, Ohio - Bowling Green State University Head Women's Golf Coach Kurt Thomas announced today the signing of two student-athletes to national letters of intent in the early signing period.
Thomas said Shelley Binzel from Dublin, Ohio, and Stephanie Elsea from Worthington, Ohio, have each decided to attend BGSU beginning in the fall of 1999.
Binzel, currently a senior at Dublin Coffman High School, was a four-year letterwinner in golf (first two years at Sacred Heart Academy in Kentucky) and the last two seasons at Coffman High. She led the Shamrocks to the Mid-Ohio Girl's Golf League title this past fall, was named to the all-league first team and was runner-up for player of the year in the conference. Binzel had a 38.8 league scoring average this past fall. She was also a scholar-athlete both as a junior and as a senior.
An Honor Roll honoree every quarter, Binzel plans to major in Business Marketing at BGSU. She also earned varsity letters in softball (two years) and basketball.
Elsea, currently a senior at Worthington Kilbourne High School, earned two varsity letters on the girls golf team at WKHS after participating on the boys golf team as a freshman, and the girls club team as a sophomore. She served as team captain both years on the girls golf team as well as being selected team MVP. Elsea had a 40.3 league scoring average this past fall.
Elsea was second team all-league as a junior and moved up to first team honors as a senior. Her final year she was fourth in the Mid-Ohio Girl's Golf League. A member of the National and Spanish Honor Society, Elsea has also been selected as a scholar-athlete and Student of the Month at WKHS.
The Bowling Green State University women's golf team participated in five fall matches and will compete in five spring matches including serving as host of the 1999 Mid-American Conference tournament at Kings Island, north of Cincinnati. The Falcons top fall finish was a fifth place in their own Falcon Invitational. BG was led in fall play by senior Heidi Hansen (Westerville, OH/Yankton, SD), who averaged 84.09 for 11 rounds. In addition to Hansen, classmate Lindsey Casterline (Northville, MI) is also a co-captain for the 1998-99 season.
Six of the eight members of the BGSU Women's Golf team had at least a 3.20 grade-point average for the 1998 Fall semester with four members making the Dean's List (3.50 or above): Angel Garrett (Noblesville, IN), Heidi Hansen, Kate Kolesnik (Oshawa, ONT) and Shannon Smith (Waynesville, OH).
