Bowling Green State University assistant softball coach Amy Kyler, a pitcher for the Akron Racers of the Women's Pro Softball League, has been named a starter for the WPSL's All-Star Game. The contest will be held Tuesday, July 13, at 7:30 p.m. in Plant City, Fla.
Kyler will be the starting pitcher for the WPSL Stars team. A total of seven Racers were named to the starting lineup for the Stars, comprised of selections from the Durham Dragons and Virginia Roadsters, in addition to Akron. The WPSL Stripes squad will feature players from the Carolina Diamonds, Georgia Pride and Tampa Bay FireStix. The game will be televised by ESPN2, airing July 29 at 9:00 p.m.
The WPSL All-Stars were selected by a combination of league head coaches, media relations directors and league office personnel. The game marks the midpoint of the 1999 WPSL season.
Kyler started for the Stars in last year's game, the inaugural contest, which was held in Akron. Kyler pitched two innings and had a no-decision in an 8-1 Stars win before a crowd of 3,873.
In the latest WPSL statistics, Kyler is ranked second in the league in earned run average, with an ERA of 1.65. Kyler, who pitches for the Racers during the BGSU off-season, has a record of 5-1 with 25 strikeouts in 47 innings of work. She leads the Racers and is tied for third in the WPSL in wins.
As a team, the Racers lead the six-team league with a 1.73 ERA. In the WPSL standings, the Racers (15-10) are in second place, a game-and-a-half behind first-place Tampa Bay (16-8). This weekend, Akron hosts Durham (13-13) for a four-game series beginning tomorrow (June 24).
Kyler, a native of Marshallville, Ohio, played collegiately at Cleveland State. She spent the last two years with the Carolina Diamonds.
