The Bowling Green State University hockey team won for the fifth time in the last seven games upending No. 8-ranked Northern Michigan, 7-4, Friday night at the BGSU Ice Arena.
The Falcons equalled their longest win streak (three games) of the season, despite falling behind 1-0 just 90 seconds into the contest when NMU's Mike Stutzel tallied his second of the year.
BG responded with four straight goals (two 5-on-5, one 5-on-4 power-play and one 4-on-5 short-handed) to take a 4-1 lead after 20 minutes. Freshman Ryan Fultz's eighth of the campaign, from Greg Day, at 4:25 tied the game at one, while Ryan Murphy's first career short-handed goal was assisted by Scott Hewson.
Adam Edinger, who led the nation in power-play goals last season, scored his second man-advantage goal in the last three games at the 10:11 mark to chase Wildcat starting goalie Dan Ragusett. Edinger's seventh of the year was assisted by Tyler Knight and Grady Moore.
Junior defenseman Louis Mass recorded his second collegiate goal and first in 61 games, when he bounced a shot from the redline past NMU's Duane Hoey with 3:44 remaining in the opening stanza. Mass' lamp-lighter was assisted by B.J. Adams and Ryan Wetterberg.
Greg Day's first of the game came unassisted at the 4:55 mark, but NMU would cut BG's lead to 5-2 at the 6:04 mark as Roger Trudeau netted his 16th of the year.
A skirmish took place at the 7:42 mark with all five skaters on each team receiving minors for roughing after the whistle. Wildcat Bryan Phillips was assessed an extra minor for roughing. At the same stoppage, NMU received a bench minor with Wildcat head coach Rick Comley also being assessed a 10-minute game misconduct.
Day's second of the night came during a BG power-play with 1:37 left in the middle stanza. His 11th of the year was assisted by Austin de Luis and Ryan Fultz.
BG's Scott Hewson scored his fourth of the campaign at 8:26 of the third period off an assist from Tyler Knight. NMU scored twice in the last nine minutes, Bryce Cockburn and Fred Mattersdorfer, to complete the scoring.
BG's Tyler Masters stopped 21 of NMU's 24 shots he faced in 52:18, while Shawn Timm, who played the first 7:42 of the second period in the BG cage, turned aside three of the four shots he faced. NMU starting goalie Dan Ragusett made seven saves on 10 shots in the first 10:11 of the contest. Duane Hoey played the final 49:49 and made 24 saves on 28 Falcon shots. BG scored on two-of-11 man-advantage opportunities, while stopping all six Wildcat power-play chances.
BG improves to 10-13 overall and 7-10 in the CCHA, while NMU falls to 16-7-2 overall and 11-4-2 in the CCHA. The teams will conclude the weekend series on Saturday with face-off at the BGSU Ice Arena slated for 7:35 p.m.
