Mohamed Fahim scored his team-leading seventh goal of the season at 81:56 breaking a 1-1 tie and propelling No. 13-ranked Southern Methodist (6-1-0) to a 2-1 victory over Bowling Green on the second day of the 1999 FIU Golden Panther Classic in Miami, Florida.
Fahim, who scored three goals in the Mustangs' 3-0 win over host Florida International Friday night, took a crossing pass from teammate Kevin Friedland and placed a shot inside the near post on the right from 12 yards.
After a scoreless first half, SMU grabbed a 1-0 lead at 78:37 when Matt Whitely scored on a header that floated over BG goalkeeper Ty Fowler. But the Falcons came back minutes later when Gene Braxton scored his first of the campaign. Braxton's goal came at 81:13 with Bobby Biggs' earning his team-leading fourth assist of the season.
Bowling Green was unable to take advantage of several serious scoring opportunities that may have ended its school-record six-game losing streak.
Midway through the first half Zac Olson was set up for a header in front of the SMU goal that hit off the crossbar and bounced away. Then moments after the Mustangs had taken their 2-1 lead, Chris Dore fired what would have been the equalizer if not for a diving save by Mustang goalkeeper Byron Foss.
The Falcons return home to open Mid-American Conference play on Sunday, October 3, when the Kentucky Wildcats invade Mickey Cochrane Field for a 2:00 p.m. match.
