Men's Soccer Falls In Double Overtime To No. 1-Ranked Penn State
January 03, 2000 | Men's Soccer
Sept. 25, 1999
Penn State's Ryan Miller scored the game's only goal off a corner kick at 18:35 of sudden-death overtime as Penn State (7-0-0) overcame a pesky Bowling Green in the opening game of the 1999 Golden Panther Soccer Classic in Miami, Florida.
Miller tallied his second goal of the year when he took a corner kick pass from teammate Ricardo Villar and scored to the left side near post. Penn State goalkeeper Whit Gibson recorded his second shutout of the season, with five saves.
Bowling Green (3-5-0) dropped its fifth-straight decision, but the Falcons nearly scored the upset over the nation's No. 1-ranked Nittany Lions. BGSU's Ben Vaccaro fired a shot that hit the crossbar and ricocheted back to teammate Zac Olson who scored what looked to be the lead goal at 32:15 of regulation. But an offensive foul in the penalty box nullified the score.
Penn State outshot Bowling Green, 13-8, but the Falcons defense, who had allowed 15 goals over their last four games, held the Nittany Lions in check with BGSU goalkeeper Ty Fowler making five saves.
The Golden Panther Classic continues on Sunday afternoon when Bowling Green takes on No. 13-ranked Southern Methodist at 12:30 p.m., followed by Penn State and host Florida International at 3:00 p.m.
