Falcons Blank Depaul To Win 1999 BGSU Soccer Classic

Bowling Green (3-0) scored two first half goals in a span of 7:14 and limited the Blue Demons to two shots on goal to win the 1999 BGSU Soccer Classic.
Sophomore Kevin Wisniewski tallied his second goal of the campaign at the 20:39 mark with assists from Tommy Thomas and Chris Dore. Dore started the play with a cross to the top of the box that Thomas backheeled to Wisniewski, who deposited a shot into the top left corner past DePaul goalkeeper Dave Wiggins.
Junior Zac Olson's goal at 27:53 completed the Falcon scoring. Olson's first goal of the season was assisted by Bobby Biggs.
BG senior goalkeeper Ty Fowler made two saves for his second whitewash of the weekend.
Shane Hudson and Dan Dembiec had DePaul's two shots on goal, both coming in the second half. DePaul, now 0-2 on the young season, was outshot by the hosts 13-10.
In the first game of the afternoon, Western Kentucky (2-1) claimed second place with a 3-1 victory over Detroit (1-2). All four goals were scored in the first half.
The Titans took a 1-0 lead at 3:31 on Marcel Flemming's third goal of the tournament. The Hilltoppers responded with the next three goals for the triumph.
Steven Brown scored at 8:44 and again at 32:00, with Matt Hawkey completing the WKU scoring at 32:46.
Detroit's starting goalkeeper Jim Grewe stopped three of six shots before being replaced by Michael McAfee at the 34:30 mark. McAfee stopped all five shots he faced. Ryan Lossie made five saves for the Hilltoppers.
Named to the All-Tournament Team were Bowling Green's Fred Degand, Chris Dore, Ty Fowler and Kevin Wisniewski, along with WKU's Steven Brown, Matt Hawkey and Bryan Robbins. Detroit was represented by Marcel Flemming and Matt Quinter, while DePaul's Shane Hudson and Joe Ahearn received all-tournament honors. BGSU's goalkeeper Ty Fowler was named Defensive MVP, with midfielder Chris Dore earning Offensive MVP accolades.
BG will participate next weekend in Bradley University's Holiday Inn City Centre Classic in Peoria, Illinois. The Falcons face the tournament hosts on Saturday and Tulsa on Sunday.
