Huntsville, Ala. -
The Bowling Green State University hockey team dropped its season opener at Alabama-Huntsville, 3-0, Friday night.
After a scoreless first period, the Chargers took a 1-0 lead on Ryan McCormack's power-play goal at the 9:48 mark of the middle stanza. Tyler Butler's dump-in hit a seam between two boards and bounced into the crease while Falcon goalie Shawn Timm had gone behind the net to stop the puck.
Karlis Zirnis scored a five-on-five goal with 1:55 remaining in the second period, while McCormack completed the scoring with a short-handed marker midway through the third period.
Timm made 26 saves for Bowling Green, while Mark Byrne was credited with 25 saves in the Charger cage. UAH, coached by former Falcon and U.S. Olympian Doug Ross, avenged two losses in BG last January.
The teams complete the weekend series Saturday at the Von Braun Center in Huntsville with face-off slated for 8 p.m. Eastern.
