Men's Soccer Enters Final Week Of Conference Play

The Bowling Green State University men's soccer team enters the final week of the Mid-American Conference season in fifth place but with two matches remaining. The Falcons host Buffalo at 3:30 p.m. on Friday (Oct. 27) and Akron at 3 p.m. on Sunday (Oct. 29). BG concludes the regular-season with a non-league match against Michigan State on Oct. 31.
BG has won three of its last four matches to improve to 6-7 overall and 2-2 in the MAC. Both Kentucky and Marshall have concluded league play with identical 4-2 records. Akron will take a 4-1 mark into Sunday's match at BG. Northern Illinois (3-2) plays at Western Michigan (0-5) on Friday, while Buffalo (1-4) plays its final conference match Friday at BG.
Should the Falcons win their final two matches and the Huskies win in Kalamazoo Friday there would be a five-way tie for first place. All five teams went 2-2 against the other four schools. Akron leads in goal differential (+10), and is followed by Marshall (+6), Bowling Green and Kentucky (+1), Northern Illinois (-2), Buffalo (-7) and Western Michigan (-9).
BG rallied from a 1-0 halftime deficit to post a 2-1 win at Oakland University on Tuesday.
OU took a 1-0 lead at the 8:24 mark when Adam Heinemann tallied his third goal of the season off an assist from Ron Mashni. BG outshot the hosts 7-3 in the first half, and 4-1 in shots on goal.
BG freshman P.J. Behan scored his first collegiate goal with 10:39 left in regulation to tie the game at one. Senior Adam Erhard notched his team-leading seventh assist on Behan's marker.
Fifth-year senior Zac Olson scored his first of the season at the 80:51 mark off an assist from senior Matt Lyons.
BG had the only two shots on goal in the second half.
Falcon freshman goalkeeper David DeGraff did not register a save, while OU goalkeeper Mike Skolnik made four saves, all in the first half.
BG had its three-game winning streak snapped Friday evening by the Kentucky Wildcats, falling 2-1 in overtime.
Senior Tommy Thomas scored from eight yards out at the 34:52 mark off an assist from junior Benjamin Vaccaro. The Wildcats tied the score at the 44:37 mark on a penalty kick by Marc Theriault.
After BG's Matt Lyons missed on a penalty kick in the final minute of regulation, Kentucky's Tyler Cook scored the match-winner 4:49 into the extra session off assists from Chris Soler and Kevin Strobo.
Falcon freshman goalkeeper David DeGraff made his lone save in the first half, while UK goalkeeper Brian O'Leary had four saves (two in the first half, one in the second half, and one in overtime).
Buffalo enters Friday's match with a 5-7-2 overall record and MAC mark of 1-4. Senior forward Tim Songer leads the Bulls in scoring with four goals and three assists for 11 points, while classmate Brian McCallion has 10 points on four goals and two assists. Sophomore Brian Wozniak has played all but 110 minutes in goal compiling a 1.90 goals-against average for 12th-year head coach John Astudillo.
BG won last year's meeting in Buffalo, 3-2 OT, to even the all-time series at 1-1. Buffalo won at BG, 2-1 OT, on Oct. 4, 1998.
Akron has won four of its last five matches to improve to 7-5-3 overall and 4-1 in the MAC. The Zips are led in scoring by Ørjan Bjnesø, who has 22 points on seven goals and eight assists. Christer Larsen has seven goals and five assists for 19 points, while Tim Cooper has added 13 points on four goals and five assists. Kyle Milligan has started every game in goal and has a 1.02 goals-against average and six shutouts.
UA posted a 1-0 triumph over BG on Oct. 22 last season to take a 27-6-3 lead in the all-time series. In the last match at Cochrane Field between BG and Akron, the teams played to a scoreless tie after 120 minutes. BG's Scott Vallow had nine saves in the match.
Senior Matt Lyons leads the Falcons in scoring with 12 points on three goals and six assists, while classmate Adam Erhard has contributed a team-high seven assists. Freshman goalkeeper David DeGraff has compiled a 1.30 goals-against average and three shutouts.
