OXFORD, Ohio - Junior Caty Rommeck had a triple-double as the Bowling Green State University volleyball team posted a four-game victory on the road against Miami University. The Falcons captured the Mid-American Conference match (15-9, 15-10, 10-15, 15-10) at MU's Millett Hall in Oxford, Ohio.
Rommeck posted a match-high 19 kills to lead the Falcons, who improve to 18-8 overall and 10-6 in MAC play. She added 12 digs and a career-high 12 total blocks, including five solo rejections, for her second triple-double of the year.
Falcon players now have three of the six triple-doubles recorded by MAC athletes this fall, as Rommeck also had a triple-double vs. Cincinnati (Sept. 2), and senior JoAnna Papageorgiou turned the trick against Ball State (Sept. 22).
Against Miami (now 10-17, 6-10 MAC), Papageorgiou had 18 kills and hit a team-best .364 on the night. She added 12 digs and had eight blocks, missing a triple-double of her own by just two blocks.
Freshman Susie Norris had 16 kills in the win, while classmate Nadia Bedricky had a BG-best 14 digs.
The Falcons pulled out to an 11-2 advantage in the first game before seeing the RedHawks reel off six consecutive points to move within three. But, BGSU closed out the match with back-to-back kills by Norris.
In game two, the Brown and Orange again jumped out to an early lead, 7-2. Again, Miami inched its way back, closing within a point at 11-10. But, a pair of RedHawk attack errors gave the Falcons a three-point edge. Then, sophomore Kristin Gamby recorded one of her nine kills on the night, and a Papageorgiou service ace gave the Falcons a two-games-to-none lead.
The third game was much different, as MU pulled out to a 9-1 lead and held off a Falcon charge. Bowling Green got to within 13-9 before the 'Hawks scored two of the next three points to win the game.
BGSU captured a back-and-forth contest in game four. The Falcons scored three unanswered points to take a 10-7 lead, and the RedHawks had to play catch-up the rest of the way.
Junior Shyann Robinson joined Rommeck, Papageorgiou and Norris in the double-digit department, with 11 kills on the night. The Falcons had a hitting percentage of .257 to Miami's .193.
Defensively, BGSU held a 16-9 advantage in blocks. Five of Rommeck's 12 blocks were of the solo variety.
Norris had a season-best four service aces, as BG held a 7-5 margin in that category. Junior setter Natalie Becker had 57 assists.
For the hosts, Lee Ann Karr led the way with 18 kills, while Kelly McCullough had 16. Susan Poll had 15 kills and hit a match-high .406 off the bench.
The win was the fifth in a row for BG, and the Falcons have now won nine of the last 10 contests.
BGSU, after losing 12-straight matches to Miami, has now won the last two series meetings. Friday's win marked BG's first victory at Millett Hall since 1993.
The victory sets up a MAC East Division showdown Saturday night (Nov. 11), as BGSU heads to Athens to face Ohio University (18-9, 11-5 MAC). A BGSU win in that match would put the teams into a tie atop the division, and would give the Falcons a sweep of the season series. A Bobcat win would give OU a two-game lead over BG with one match remaining in conference play.
Start time for Saturday's BGSU-Ohio match is set for 7:00 p.m. at OU's Convocation Center ("The Convo").
