The Bowling Green State University hockey team suffered a 2-1 setback at Northern Michigan on Friday.
The Wildcats' Terry Harrison scored an even-strength goal in the first period and Ryan Riipi added a power-play marker late in the second period.
BG freshman defenseman Brian Escobedo scored his first collegiate goal, on a Falcon power play, with 8:20 remaining in regulation to pull BG within one goal at 2-1. Senior Curtis Valentine and junior Greg Day assisted on Escobedo's lamp-lighter.
BG sophomore netminder Tyler Masters made 30 saves including 13 in the middle stanza, while NMU goaltender Craig Kowalski turned aside 39 BG shots including 15 in the final period.
The Falcons set a season-high with 40 shots on goal. BG scored on one of its seven man-advantage opportunities, while the Wildcats converted on one of their five power play chances.
Bowling Green is now 1-5-1 overall and 1-3-1 in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association, while NMU improves to 5-1-2 overall and 3-1-1 in the CCHA. The teams complete the weekend series with a 7:05 p.m. faceoff Saturday night at NMU's Berry Events Center.
