BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - A 60-yard punt return for a touchdown by Marshall University's Maurice Hines with 2:45 remaining in the fourth quarter lifted the Thundering Herd to a 20-13 victory over the Bowling Green State University football team Saturday (Nov. 4) at BGSU's Perry Stadium.
The Hines touchdown capped a Marshall comeback from a 13-0 deficit. MU improved to 5-4 overall, 4-2 in Mid-American Conference play and -- more importantly -- 4-0 in MAC East Division games. The Falcons drop to 2-7, 2-4 and 1-4, respectively.
The day started off on a successful note for the Brown and Orange. On the first play from scrimmage, MU quarterback Byron Leftwich was intercepted by the Falcons' Karl Rose, putting BG in business at the Herd 46-yard line.
From there, the Falcons went on a five-play drive, capped by a 22-yard touchdown pass from Andy Sahm to David Bautista with 12:08 left in the first period.
A pair of Mike Knapp field goals, the last at the halftime gun, gave BGSU a 13-point margin heading into the intermission.
The Herd got a J.R. Jenkins field goal in the third quarter, and another early in the fourth, before exploding for a pair of touchdowns in a 1:09 span.
After a Pat Fleming punt pinned the visitors at their own three-yard line, the Herd went on a nine-play, 97-yard drive. Franklin Wallace's 23-yard run, followed by a Jenkins PAT, tied the game with 3:54 left. Then, after holding the Falcons on the ensuing drive, Hines returned a punt for the winning score.
The Herd held a slight advantage in first downs (16-14) and total yardage (266-208), with seven first downs and 122 of those yards coming in the final quarter.
Leftwich completed 20-of-35 passes for 202 yards, but was intercepted twice, by Rose and Janssen Patton. For Patton, the interception was his fourth of the year.
Sahm was 12-of-22 for 123 yards and the touchdown. He was picked off three times on the day.
Bautista led all receivers with six catches for 78 yards, while teammate Kurt Gerling had four receptions for 44 yards. MU's Nate Poole had five grabs for 57 yards.
Wallace led all rushers with 86 yards on 20 carries, including the TD. John Gibson had 48 net yards on 20 carries to lead the Falcons.
BGSU will return to action next Saturday (Nov. 11), hosting Ohio University to close the home portion of the schedule. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. at Perry Stadium.
