Bowling Green State University senior midfielder Fred Degand (Highland Park, Illinois/Deerfield) was named to the Great Lakes Region First Team as announced today by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA). His selection marks the seventh consecutive year a Falcon has been named to the Great Lakes first team.
Degand started all 15 matches he played and finished second on the squad with 12 points. He was second on the team with four goals and third with four assists.
BG finished the season with an overall mark of 9-8-1 and a Mid-American Conference record of 4-2-0, which placed the Falcons in a four-way tie for first place. BG advanced to the MAC Championship game, falling to Kentucky 1-0.
Degand was a second-team All-Great Lakes selection as a defender following the 1999 campaign.
In 2000, he scored BG's lone goal in a 2-1 setback at Creighton on Sept. 3. The Bluejays lost 2-0 yesterday to Connecticut in the NCAA Championship game. Degand also recorded goals against Wisconsin-Milwaukee, Vanderbilt and Michigan.
