BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - Lauren Shenk scored 20 points to lead five Ohio State University players in double digits, as the Buckeyes recorded a 95-49 victory over the Bowling Green State University women's basketball team Tuesday (Dec. 12). A crowd of 2,024 saw the non-conference game at BGSU's venerable Anderson Arena.
The Buckeyes, now 7-0 on the season, burst out to a 9-2 lead and were never headed. BGSU was within seven points at 15-8 after a basket by senior Afra Smith at the 12:45 mark, but the visitors made a 6-0 run, with LaToya Turner scoring the last four points, and BG never got within single digits again.
Turner had 17 points, six rebounds, six blocked shots and four steals in just 21 minutes of action, while teammates Courtney Coleman and Jamie Lewis had 13 points each. Didi Reynolds added 11 for the Buckeyes.
The Falcons, now 3-6 on the year, played without three starters for the fourth consecutive game. Seniors Angie Farmer and Jackie Adlington and junior Francine Miller all continued to sit out with injuries. Miller, however, may begin practicing later in the week and could potentially see action in the Falcons' next contest.
For the Brown and Orange, Smith had 12 points after making six of her first seven shots on the night. Freshman Kelly Kapferer had eight points off the bench, while classmates Lindsay Austin and Stefanie Wenzel had seven points apiece. For Wenzel, the total represented a season high.
Junior Dana Western led the Falcons with eight rebounds and two blocks. The Falcons outrebounded the taller Buckeyes, 19-16, in the first half, and the rebounding war was dead even at the end of the night, 33-33.
The Buckeyes shot 53.6 percent for the first half and 52.5% for the game. OSU made 5-of-8 three-pointers in the first 20 minutes, and finished with 10 treys in 19 attempts for the night (52.6%).
By contrast, the Falcons were held to 36.4% shooting, including just two three-pointers in six attempts. BGSU had made at least five treys in each of the season's first eight games.
BGSU will play one final time before the Christmas holiday, taking on Wright State University Saturday afternoon (Dec. 16). Tipoff is scheduled for noon at WSU's Ervin J. Nutter Center.
