CLEVELAND, Ohio - The Mid-American Conference office released the men's and women's preseason tennis polls today (Feb. 10), and the Bowling Green teams were picked to finish third and sixth, respectively. The polls were conducted among the MAC head coaches.
On the men's side, head coach Jay Harris and his team received one first-place vote and 31 total points. Ball State was picked to win the conference, while Western Michigan, last year's league tournament champion, was tabbed to place second. Sophomore Vitek Wild, a 1998-99 All-MAC Second-Team selection as a freshman, returns to head a youthful Falcon squad that features four freshmen, three sophomores, two juniors and one senior.
The Falcon women of head coach Penny Dean received 59 points. WMU, the league tournament champion last spring, was picked to repeat, with Marshall predicted to finish second. Miami was tabbed for third, followed by Eastern Michigan and Ball State. BGSU has a pair of returning 1998-99 All-MAC Second-Team performers in juniors Abby Bratton and Meghan Rhodes. The Falcons, off to a 4-0 start in dual-match play this year, have one sophomore, four juniors and three seniors on the eight-woman roster.
The BGSU women open the MAC portion of the schedule on March 24 with a home match vs. Miami. The following day, the Falcon men begin conference play with a home dual vs. Buffalo. Both conference championships are scheduled for late April, with Western Michigan hosting the women's tourney, and Toledo welcoming the men's squads to town.
